    So it has happened. I need to find a new Equipment manager for our property. I haven't ever had to advertise for this position, and am a little skeptical on what process to take on. I've read so many posts on the gcsaa forums both good and bad about this process, because it is very instrumental to the success of our facilities. The factors that might influence participation in the application process are daunting, and I'm looking for a bit of feedback on what channels to go through. As of right now, we have a wage fairly decided on, but aren't sure if we should make it hourly, or salaried. I see positives and negatives to both. I'm prepared to offer a competitive compensation and benefit package, and really hope our next E.T./manager makes it their shop, so to speak.

    Where, besides the gcsaa and turfnet type avenues, do most of you find your equipment technicians? Thanks to any and all who have any advice.

    Ask your equipment sales people if they recommend anyone. That's how I found mine a year and a half ago. If your distributors have mobile service techs they're a good source, too. All those guys should be well connected with who's good and who's not in your area (not that you should be head hunting other guys' mechanics, but you may offer a better fit/opportunity for someone, especially with all the courses with financial difficulties).

    Also, if there are any large multi-course facilities around you, they probably have a head guy with a couple of assistants. Those assistants may be ready to take on their own shop. I interviewed one such guy that I would've hired with no reservations, he just wasn't quite as good as the guy I did hire and the timing wasn't right for him to leave the other facility.

    I never posted my position on GCSAA, etc., interviewed four people all by word-of-mouth, and only went a few days without a mechanic.

    I would go salaried as well. Works out great for us. Good luck with your search.

    My first suggestion would be to advertise on http://www.igcema.org . Best place to advertise is the association many are apart of. Turfnet and GCSAA are also great places to advertise as well.

    As far as salary vs hourly the industry is split down the middle 50/50 on this according to our last survey so I think it's whatever works best for your club.
