I am in Michigan and our township is trying to tax some of our equipment (pumps, sprinklers, equipment) as real property instead of personal property or capital equipment. Real property is supposed to be land and buildings. Personal property is considered to be all the capital equipment we own, that we already paid taxes on when we purchased it. Our local township is saying that our irrigation system is real property and should be taxed as such. I'm just curious as to how your township or state is handling your taxes when you upgrade your irrigation system?

I think the National Golf Foundation would be a good start to answer this question.

I think each and every area of the country will have to deal with that individually. Do not think you can make an industry or nationwide standard for such items as how property is taxed. If the state, county, parish, township, city etc needs more revenue be prepared to fight it. A good case of the 99% coming after the "percieved rich folks at the golf course".

Contact the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association. In my reading it is very likely that your irrigation system components will be considered commercial real property, not commercial personal property. Keep in mind that your property for ad valorem tax purposes will differ from your property values as they relate to tax basis, depreciation, etc. Good Luck, Dane
