I just heard this on the radio this morning coming into work,

Some guy complaining about having to pay property taxes for the schools and he doesn't have kids or have ever had kids so he doesn't think he should have to pay.

This came up because we have a 20 cent operating levy (10 cents on $100 for the next two years) and a separate bond issue to do some upgrades and add an elementary school. Now if someone doesn't think the upgrades are needed or the additional operating levy, that's fine, but don't people realize poor schools affect not just the kids but the community? I know I don't like paying all the taxes I pay, I don't use all of what they go to support but I can look at the bigger picture of things.

Of course a couple callers later was talking about the 2nd amendment issue and saying we should just ignore the laws, he even complained about our state's conceal and carry law, his take was we should have them. I wanted to ask him if it was then ok to drive 100 miles per hour because I wanted to have the freedom to drive as fast as I want. My thought was it doesn't matter if one like laws or not, isn't the publics safety part of the reason we have laws?

Ok I'll get off the soap box now.

The difference is that the 2nd amendment specifically states the right to bear arms. Theres no amendment offerd by the constitution that says we can drive 100mph, big difference.

As far as the property tax issue, most people dont have a problem paying property tax. You may have the selct few that think like this guy. Maybe he has a school board that has been digging in his pocketbook for years to bolster already extravagant benefit and retirement packages and he is fed up with it. That happens in many districts.

55+ communities that don't allow school age children here in Marion County are exempt from the school property tax. Hence, our school system is millions in the hole each year with no end in sight.

You are absolutely correct that quality of life starts at young age with proper schooling. That's why so many foreign countries put such a strong emphasis on schooling, and pay for kids college education. A college education in 'Merica is too dang expensive now and the Universities wonder why enrollment is down. To combat this, they increase tuition. It's a downward spiral that is already causing schools to drown in debt and cut necessary programs to survive. The part that affects us is research dollars - something we've all seen dwindle in the recent years.

Educating our youth is a burden we all should have, regardless of if we have kids or not.

I also pay for litter control for our county to clean up roadsides. They collect millions each year then have inmate labor do the work or volunteers under an "Adopt a Road" program. Where does the money they collect really go?

Not that I agree or disagree with the disgruntled tax payer, but I think it is generally safe to say that that isn't the only reason they are millions in the hole. If you don't have it, don't spend it!?

Slow day yesterday. I have a friend that is very passionate about this topic. I've listened to him hours on end give presentations to anybody that would listen. The sad part is, he's right. Our county is full of 55+ communities and not a single one of them get charged school tax. That leaves the burden on the rest of us. Our school system is in the hole because they built schools like crazy trying to keep up with the influx of families moving to our area when housing was booming, eating up a lot of the reserves. Our classroom sizes are still over the state limit, but it's cheaper to pay the state fine than to hire another teacher or build another school. They learned from their mistakes from just a few years ago. We also have many aging buildings that need dire repairs to stay open. Last year two elementary schools closed for various reasons because the school board didn't have the influx of cash to keep them open. Our county is also very large, and the transportation budget eats up a lot of the overall operating budget the school system has each year simply due to fuel usage.

The school board has tried their best to overcome a lot of these issues. They've looked at year 'round school and contracting out the bus system. Both got voted down by the public - including those in 55+ communities that don't pay school taxes to begin with!!

Everyone has a vested interest in the education of children. Its crazy to think that a person who does not have any kids has no responsibly to see that children get a good education. Better to spend the money on schools than prisons.

Whats even crazier is that our education system is still revolving around a 300 year old concept. This is the biggest problem in our schools. It's designed around how old you are, and how well you can sit still for 50 minute periods. Colleges have been very slow to respond to the reality that many high school seniors graduate with 1-2 years of college credit. They still plot out degrees in a 4 year cycle making it very difficult for student to finish early.
