Has anyone have their work week changed from the traditional Sunday - Saturday to Friday -Thursday. I can see some benefits in the hotel end of the company but what are the pros and cons if the golf maintenance. We still just do a mow and go on the weekends.

There was a discussion about this on the GCM facebook page a few days ago. We still do a mow and go also, the rationale being that weekend golfers simply dont want us around, especially not running the bigger machinery.

(come to think of it, weekday golfers dont want us around either ;) )

Some individuals believe it shows their importance by having some sort of maintenance done later into the weekend (days).
I, for one, know I'm not that important....and, aside for those said individuals, NOBODY cares.
Life is too short for you and your crew members
    Mow/Go...do something meaningful

I went to this schedule a few years back. We have found it to be very popular with our staff. We originally did it to avoid having to pay insurance benefits by having employees average less than 30 hours a week. Later that was not important because they are seasonal and they will never average over 30 hours a week over a 12 month period (Obamacare requirement).

My groundskeepers work a 10 day on 4 day off schedule.

    Day 1 Monday 6AM-12PM
    Day 2 Tuesday 6AM-12PM
    Day 3 Wednesday 6AM-12PM
    Day 4 Thursday 6AM-12PM
    Day 5 Friday 6AM-10AM
    Day 6 Saturday 6AM-9AM
    Day7 Sunday 6Am-9AM
    Day 8 Monday 6AM-2PM
    Day 9 Tuesday 6AM-2PM
    Day10 Wednesday 6AM-2PM

Crew is split into two 7 person teams. Every Monday-Wed the whole crew is working. These are our slowest days so we can get the most work done. The course is really busy every Friday-Sunday so we cut and go. It is a challenge when we have tournaments on Fridays getting everything done. I usually hire a floater who will work most weekends and holidays. Supervisors (Supt, Asst Supt and Irr. Tech) split up weekends working every third weekend. One team will work every Monday holiday which is payed at time and a half. After a couple of years i found out that several of the crew members hated having to work payday weekend so if you have the holidays off you work payday weekends. I alternate the teams every year. The crew loves it because they know exactly which weekends they have 4 days off the first day they return. We like it because we have 9 people scheduled every weekend (including supervisor and floater) which gives us the ability to let crew members off when they have schedule conflicts. Special projects get done generally on Mon-Wed and the crew works late if we have to. I like the fact we are working when its most efficient.

Im not sure what you mean by work week. Since we have to have a crew here 7 days a week 360 days a year our prep is like most other clubs where we work 8 hour days Mon-Friday and cut and leave Sat & Sun. This past fall we needed to cut back labor to take out overtime so I started leaving half a day on Fridays. first time in 28 years I am leaving early on Fridays. my whole crew alternates weekends so basically we work 12 days straight before getting two days off.

Now our payroll week is different - our payroll in on the Bi-weekly system and it goes from Wednesday to Tuesday with us getting our checks on Friday (direct deposit on Thursday).

What was stupid is when I first arrived here our payroll started on Sunday and ended on Saturday (bi-weekly) with payday on the Friday before the end of the pay period. so I had to guess on my guys showing up and how long we would work. It took me almost 5 years to get them to go with the current system.

our upper management thinks if the work week ends on a weekend(when we are busiest) we are less likely to send staff home that will be on overtime. but if the week ended on Thursday we may be incline to send employees home on Wed-Thur to save on Overtime. I can see how it may help in the hotel setting but not quite sure how it may apply in golf maint.

    Anthony,

My staff rarely works any OT, but even if we did my course is too busy on weekends to get any work done efficiently after 9:00 AM. Our work week is Monday-Sunday.

I don't miss those years of putting in 75 to 80 hours a week. Here we are paid bi-weekly, Monday to Sunday with paycheck on the Friday after the second week so I never have to guess who was here or how long we stayed. Now for the fun part. told to work no overtime for the guys which sucks cause they don't make a lot. I have 6 guys so they work every other weekend. The hours we work is the biggest change for them. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we work from 6:30 to 4:00. If its your weekend to work, you have Thursday off and the guys that are off the weekend work 6:30 to 12:30. And everybody works again til 12:30 on Friday. Everyone says we get more done now than when they had twice the crew.
