I have been to the dermatologist twice in three months. I found out today he wants to see me again in four months this time. Each time he as taken 5-7 biopsies, has not spared the nitrogen gun and gave me a full body inspection. I asked if he really felt this was necessary. He said yes because my brother had had a serious melanoma. He asked how long it has been since my brother was diagnosed and if I ever told a dermatologist about it. It was his feeling that anybody with a close relative who has been diagnosed needs to be monitored very closely.

I am at the dermatologist 1 time per year and sometimes twice; depends on whether I see more spots appear prior to the scheduled visit. I have had numerous pre-cancerous spots removed with liquid nitrogen and had 4 spots removed by the knife.

Oops, forgot about two other knife removals; the scrape kind. Those ones itch!

    Scott,

I have been going as frequently as monthly since I was 23 years old. I am currently on a 3 month schedule and have had more biopsies and surgeries that I can remember. I have scars on my back in the shape of "S" and "L" which happen to be my daughters initials. I have scars that still itch, even though they were from surgeries 7 or 8 years ago. Most of my scars look like zippers. I am fortunate that I have a doctor that is concerned of my well being, and doesn't let anything slide when I make my visits. I am also fortunate that nothing major has come up, and anything that has come up has been taken off with the scalpel. Skin cancer runs in my family and I am at a higher risk due to my job, having fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes. If my Dermatologist wants to see me weekly, I would make the time to do it.

I am also fortunate that my insurance pays for about 90% of this. My total annual visits maybe cost me $100. Not sure i would go as often if they didn't.

I would never thought of going until my dad had Melanoma. My wife made my first appointment. For all I know she might have already saved my life without me knowing it.

Blond (grey now) hair, blue eyes here too. My great-grandfather, who built wind ships in New England after coming here from Sweden has two other Superintendent offspring and a Golf Pro in Arizona. I met one once for a couple minutes at a GCSAA Conference. Swedes do not tend to be too lovey dovey, regardless of the bikini pics you've seen! I lost a friend a year or so ago to melanoma, so I guess I will dial in for the frequent visits to the doctor.

Sorry, off topic, but I believe I know these offspring you speak of.

    Scott,

Fifty-six years old and in the been working out on golf courses since I was 15. I went for the first time last year and think it turned out pretty well. Had one spot surgically removed because it was a squamous cell carcinoma. It took 12 stitches to close the gash. Funny that it showed up in the back of my head where the hair is still fairly thick and almost always under a hat when I'm out on the course. Had probably 25 pre-cancer spots treated and frozen. Just went back a month or so ago and had no need for biopsies and only had about 10 spots that needed to be frozen. Have one more appointment in 6 months and then my dermatologist says annual checks should be good enough. I would recommend anyone going to the GIS go to the free screenings if they still have them. Always said I would but never seemed to get there.

65 years old and grew up a surfer kid. I have at lest 2 visits a year and have had more pre-cancers get the cold treatment than i can count. Fortunately, I have only had basal cells taken off and nothing worse. Too much Scottish ancestry to think I can avoid the dermatologist. I tan fairly easy everywhere except my face. I wish now I would have taken better care of my face and arms growing up because that is where 100% of my dermatologist work has been performed. He tells me I look pretty good during some visits then proceeds to wipe out my face and arms. I would hate to see what a bad visit looks like! You younger guys in your 20's and 30's need to take this stuff seriously. All you need to do is look at or listen to us old codgers and you will see your future if you choose to ignore us!

57, red hair/brown eyes, first diagnosed with level one melanoma on my cheek two years ago. Since then, I was going for a twice a year inspection where they cut out a spot on my back and chest that was cancer free, but quit going because I've been paying the deductible off slowly ever since the first operation. I've been thinking of going back when I get laid off this winter since the bill's been paid but with poor medical coverage it makes you drag your feet.

I go every three years and get a prescription for Effudex or the generic. It is a cream that will "burn out" the cells that are damaged before they become trouble. Use it on the face and arms and the dermatologist checks everything else. You look like hell for about 6 weeks in the middle of treatment but I've been doing golf course work for 44 years. That's a lot of sun exposure. I wear a hat but no sunscreen ever. so far so good.

Over 60 and go twice a year........I go in the spring usually April or May and again in the fall.......next month. First time I went years ago the dermatologist looked at me with the shirt off and asked "Vietnam vet?" I replied yes.........his dad was also and had seen many of us that wore a flack jacket and nothing beneath it. Have had only a few removals over the years but something to consider serious if in the business.

45 and been in the industry 25 years and have never gone...never even thought of going. Do you guys go because of spots showing up or is it more preventative and you want to make sure? Never put thought into this until this subject came up on here.

I go a minimun 1x per year sometimes twice. Another thing is prevention - sunscreen - I apply it EVERY morning whether I am going to work or not. Don't forget your ears and the back of your neck.

    Michael,

I would suggest that anyone in this business who is outside a good portion of the time should go and be checked regularly. Better to know sooner than later. I had heard the stories of others but always managed to put it off until last year. With some other medical issues going on I just decided it was probably also time to see the dermatologist. I even remember when he asked me why I was there telling him "I've been in every other section of this clinic in the past few months so I thought I would stop and see this department too!". It isn't a big deal if you catch everything early.

    Michael,

In my case, my red haired/blue eyed uncle died of late diagnosed melanoma at the age of 63. I don't know what these other guys heard from their dermatologists but mine told me, while I should use sunscreen and wear a wide brimmed hat today, the damage to my skin probably occurred as a kid and it takes a long time to show itself.

    Micheal,

Go once and then the Dermatologist will tell you how often you have to go.

I go to the Dermatologist twice a year now but was going quarterly for a while. It seemed like I was having a Basal Cell Carcinoma show up (face, arms, hand, ankle, shoulder) in Biopsy's every other month. My guess it had something to do with the first couple of years I worked in Hawaii 27 years ago. I was young and never used sunscreen, but finally figured out the sun burns I was getting in Hawaii were much worse than the ones I got in Chicago. Last year I had a Squamous Cell Carcinoma come off my cheek right in a place I had treated with Effudex twice, Effudex does a nice job of cleaning up some of your damaged skin but is not fool proof. I will be doing another round of Effudex on my face this winter, my Dermatologist is very concerned about my forehead. Talk about drawing attention to yourself, some people laugh at you, some people ask where you went on vacation, some people avoid you, and a few will ask what happened. Thats a 6 weeks you want to avoid public appearances, family pictures, and crowded resturants.I feel like a live Skin Cancer awareness sign, but it has led to several friends going to the dermatologist as a result. I do it in the winter because it hurts to wear a hat and your face is a real mess so you want to be out of the sun during the treatment time.

Just saw a scroll across the bottom of a news channel this morning: Drinking coffee helps prevent so skin cancers, maybe that is why I've been lucky so far?

After reading this post I went in for a check up Wed 11/9/2011....Lot of spots, but gotta clean bill...no cancer. Took the wife in that day also to have some stitches removed from her left cheek. Melanoma. About 12 stitches worth. It was maybe less than an 8th of an inch in diameter. On the outside.

My bi annual trip to the dermatologist was yesterday. Two pre cancerous lesions were frozen during the office visit. For all of you younger guys schedule those visits to the doctor. As you get older the risk increases so do due diligence to prevent it from happening...........the preventative maintenace is a lot easier than the alternative.

One of my (good)stoner employees sent me this video and while I used to believe medical dope was just a way of justifying a habit, I'm now wondering. It might be an option for some of you guys who get carved up like the proverbial Christmas turkey a couple times a season. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has tried this where legal and if it works as well as in the video. My understanding is that you don't get high from the topical application. Take a look and comment

My understanding is that if your state allows the use of medical marijuana, it would be available. I know up here you can buy hemp oil at a place called Hempola, but it is made from low THC hemp seed as opposed to the drug type. I don't know if it would have the same effect or not.

I went back to the dermatologist today. I got more biopsies and crusty areas burned off with the liquid nitrogen, so I guess I will be scabby for a month then get a couple months off before the next go round. I made the comment that I wished I had known, I would have done more to cover up. My doctor told me that most of my damage occurred when I was a kid, not an adult. I guess that means if you have a young family cover your kids and yourself. He also said it only takes one bad sun burn. I have had many dozens in my life.
