I'm sure this has probably been dicussed but throwing it out there for respones. I am looking to get some help from membership to help with some detail work. You know, pulling weeds in beds, pinecones/sticks in beds, divots, etc. I have had a few members express interest in this so I think it would work.

    Anyone have experience with this?

    Thanks,

My personal opinion is that this is a bad idea for a multitude of reasons, but primarily because I don't think that the people who pay the bills should be asked to pull the weeds. They should instead, be asked to pony up for some help to pull the weeds while they are out playing.

    Good luck, man.

    Andy,

I have a volunteer group of members that do that now... seems like it's been a main stay at the low budget private clubs I've been at... they love to keep it on the cheap!!

Currently, I have one former BOD who is terrific... I have him be the point man for all of the work and he and I get together once per week or so and go over the priorities. We have everyone who participates sign a waiver (which I'm not sure if it's kosher as I wasn't involved...) and only using light tools (no use of our carts, loader, etc.). It has definitely helped us, but I would much prefer if they would just give me the budget to provide the results the normal way!!

When I've been asked to go along with this...it's been a disaster.
Seems like I end up with more problems than the weeds, divots, etc. the volunteers were trying to address.
Mainly having to get up off my couch to check up on them and then having to send the staff behind them to finish or complete.
This has made MORE work and the volunteers think, "Hey, that was easy. Why do they take so long"

We have an annual member clean up day. Everyone checks in at 8 am at the pro shop and gets to pick one of several items to accomplish from a list I compiled the week before. Often times you get a group of members that have it out for a certain tree or problem area but I live with it. The three area high schools that use our facility also show up on this day to work. I've had a few situations where there was a lot of cleanup left when they were done but all in all its a success. I've never seen a membership that cares for their course like they do here. If you spend the time to organize and prioritize projects for them it's amazing how many things you can get accomplished in a short amount of time that pays all summer long. At 1 pm we bring everyone in for a lunch at the café followed by a golf outing in which they can bring one free guest. Several members (about 15) spend the entire day working over flower beds, trimming yardage markers or overhanging branches, painting benches and hole posts that hold ballwashers. Never have I had the comment of "that was easy, what takes you so long." They actually go the other way of saying "wow, that would have took you and your crew a couple of weeks to get done." Maybe I'm just lucky and have one of the best memberships out there but I believe the relationships formed between my crew and the membership is far better from this experience then if we didn't have it. One key that makes it successful is me and my crew actively participating. Constantly running trucks to dump debris and myself making continued laps around the course encouraging people of their work while also critiquing it. Be active, stay positive, and I've found more benefits then not. Good luck, its worth it!!

    Andy,
Member help has turned into evening cocktail parties with occasionally filling a divot. I had several people tell me they wanted a divot part, 4 people showed up. I then got to go fill divots with four members, would rather have 3 guys do this as a Friday second job. I also had someone tell me they wanted to have a "Poa picking party on greens. Just what I want, cocktail heavy members putting holes in the greens. I am in a spot where they do give me the budget to get it done, so I just say we will take care of it, if you want to help fill your divots and repair two ball marks on each green when you play. I'm sure it could work, just has not worked for me yet.
