- Strengthen your team and your operation: Employee training builds confidence, improves safety and performance, and recognizes crew members’ professional achievements.
As the golf season winds down in much of the country, the fall and winter months can be a great time for your team to hone their skills and prepare for 2027. As part of GCSAA’s workforce development initiatives, two certificate programs offer opportunities to build essential skills, keep your crew motivated and help your operation run smoothly.
“GCSAA members asked for practical training to help them build skilled, knowledgeable crews, and these certificates are a direct result of that feedback,” Kelli Norwood, GCSAA’s director of learning and career development. “GCSAA members shaped the content around everyday needs on the golf course, giving superintendents tools to train their teams and greater confidence in their crews’ ability to do the job well.”
Greenkeeper Certificate
Launched in 2025, the Greenkeeper Certificate provides education in entry-level golf course maintenance skills. To earn the certificate, crew members complete six webinars, pass an exam and demonstrate proficiency in key areas, including turfgrass preparation and maintenance, equipment use and safety, teamwork, communication and golf course etiquette.
There is no time limit to complete the program, so your crew members can work at their own pace.
Program costs:
- GCSAA members: $50
- Nonmembers: $65 certificate fee plus $270 in webinar fees, for a total of $335
Spray Technician Certificate
Launched this month, the Spray Technician Certificate is designed to provide golf course management professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to safely, accurately and effectively apply pesticides and fertilizers.
The program provides spray technicians, assistant superintendents and other developing professionals with foundational education in chemical behavior, environmental responsibility and golf course-specific best practices.
The certificate includes 10 learning units covering chemical safety and personal protective equipment (PPE), application techniques, equipment and calibration, granular applications, weed and disease identification, best management practices, program development, post-application procedures, troubleshooting and professionalism.
The program helps the person handling applications on your crew build the knowledge and confidence to be a valuable asset to your operation.
Program costs:
- GCSAA members: $150
- Nonmembers: $250 certificate fee plus $660 in webinar fees, for a total of $910
These certificate programs help you develop a crew trained in key skills while giving crew members recognition for their achievements. They’re a win for everyone and a great way to make fall and winter days more productive.
