Unemployed again for the second time in two years. First time was at course for 12 years, did grow-in went thru the good times and then like everyone the money dried up. New GM was brought in(only claim to fame was turning around Cable TV franchises). So all original management was let go. Three months later heard a local super walked off job, so contacted employer. 18 hole course and a 27 about 25 miles apart. That lasted 11 months. COD with all suppliers, 18 holer staff of 6(2 were night watermen), 27 holer staff was cut to 6 and my hours were cut to 30 per week and had to punch time clock. then they said they had to cut more and the COO felt the assist. at the 18 holer was on the same page as her on just about everything, so he could handle the job of both courses. I could stay as the Irrigation tech(cut in hourly pay to $18). So, see you later. Decided to start Irrigation services business.
Unbelievable response. Seems if you've been a golf course superintendent most of the non-golfing public thinks you actually know what you are doing. Nice change. Don't miss the BS at a course, set my own hours, and the customers are really appreciative when their problems are taken care of. Will be 62 soon, and I think from the response I HAVE not received from all the jobs I have applied for this was the best option for me. Will stay a member of GCSAA(retired) and local chapter and will miss all the great friends I have made in this industry.
