I was just leaving the clubhouse today when a lady, I am guessing 60 to 65 came waddling in after the 9th hole. She asked the front desk, "are the greens fast today, cause I had a few 3 putts." Manager looked at me like it was my fault. I told him later, pretty furiously, if someone has to ask about the speed of the greens after playing them, and you think its my fault than I quit. I wanted to tell him to post a sign outside that said, fast, medium, or slow. I have never had a player ask about the stimp, since we are a little 18 holer charging $20 a round with cart. Is it getting that bad people rely on a speed posting instead of actually putting to see? I buckled laughing after that comment especially after playing 9 holes. FYI rolled about 9, and only because of people like her. I along with members would like a 10, but since we are semi private we need to adjust for idiots like her and our other clientele.

    Nicholas,

You have a wonderful opportunity to post green speeds and you're blowing it? You said the speeds were 9', correct? Post an 11. Imagine the possibilities.

My ladies want them a 9 on ladies day, the men want them a 20 on men's day. Two days apart.

Andy: That should be easy to accomplish just write those numbers on the sign for each day....or make them 11 on ladies day and 22 on men's day like Clay is suggesting :)

    Nicholas,
Try to relate it to them in speed of play and not speed of greens even though they are proportional to one another. 4 hours-8.5, 4.5 hour-9, 5 hours-10, 5.5 hours-11, and quit golf-12.
Your average golfer can't handle greens above 10. I don't care what they tell you. I find it comical that a 35 handicap golfer (male or female) complains the greens are slow, when it takes them 5 shots to reach the green and then 3 or 4 putts for their 8 or 9. My opinion of course. Have a nice season. Kim

When people ask about speed I refuse to give a number. We hover between 9.5 and 10.5 depending on where we are with the v-cut and topdressing that day of the week. Instead, I tell them how smooth they are. Did your ball roll out OK? Did it fishtail at the end or its last roll go sideways? The answer is always no.

My membership avearage age is 67. We could very easily keep them in the 10.5-11.5 range and keep 2% of them happy. As it stands we shoot for 10 to keep 90% happy. The greatest day was in November during our Ryder Cup event when they were a perfect 11.5. I had more complaints that day of the greens being too fast and unfair than I ever have. Point taken, I'll keep them slow.

TV is killing our industry. I wish we could throw the stimp meter in the trash. Most people don't even know what it is. At the end of the day, memberships are much happier with greens that are alive. Ear muffs are worn by me everyday.

Daniel is right, I heard for 2 years that "the old guy kept them at 12 all year round" so last season we rolled 11'3" for about a week and it went from people saying our 9'6" was a 7' to people saying our 11'3" was 13'. Nicholas, I have a great relationship with a salesman who was formerly Supt at a top 50 club and what he tells me is that you can take a brillian businessman, attorney (oxymoron I know), dentist etc... and put them on a golf course and they're all idiots. Put a punching bag in your office and slug it a few times/week or day when needed then remember you are the one who knows what you're doing.

I had a member ask me if I could get the greens faster. He turned to his playing partner, another member and said "remember when these greens were a 14?" I started to laugh, got in my cart and drove off. I'm sure I'll get fired soon!

Today the GM/Club Pro played and thought the greens were very nice, "perfect" I think he said. I asked about the speed and he said they were "right on, perfect". I then told them the were rolling a 10 and he freaked out saying they were to fast. I seriously had a 30 min conversation with him about him and his colleagues determining greens by a number. I said "I thought you said they were perfect?" He said, " yeah but that is too fast." But it wasn't fast before I told him the stimp. I guess I could put it in terms of driving a car. 60 is hard to differ from 55 with the naked eye, but it is still against the law.

I rather have slow healthy greens than fast dead greens in the heat of summer!

I overheard a very well dressed (golf attire) golfer on the putting green this morning.

    He stated:
"I heard that on fast greens only 75% of putts left short don't go in."

Sooo...If they're slow do only 25% of the putts left short not go in. I would really like to know???
