   Dear Fellow Superintendents,
   
   I am about to fill out the form to teach for the GCSAA in Orlando 2014. The subject is How to Write a Course Policy/Standards Manual.
   
   Just as a preliminary survey, how many Superintendent on this forum think this is a vital topic ?
   
   As an aside I have been writing them for multiple course sites and individual 18 holes sites here throughout Asia for the past 16 years and find them to be very effective in bridging the gap between the owners/ greens committees and the Superintendents and their staff. The written policy takes the subjectivity out of how we maintain our courses with our current wherewithal and puts more objectivity there as to where we really stand with what we have at hand and how to move to the next level, if that is what the Club desires.

   I am beginning my third season as a GCS, and am in the process of writing up and implementing a Standards policy. I actually found some helpful examples to start from in these forums. I think this is a vital asset to any Superintendent. It establishes expectations and goals for all employees, gives a sense of prestige to the overall operation, and i expect it to be a good tool for training and grooming new employees in the future. It is also a means to help in explaining the intensity of maintenance and clear standards for the finished product for employees who have no real sense of the importance of the more minute details of quality turf maintenance as they pertain to golf playability.

   Adam, Thanks for your comments and glad you were able to find some helpful examples in this forum.
   
   Interestingly enough in the March issue of the USGA Greens Section there is a great article by MacDonald Niven and at the end of the article there are links to many valuable references on Setting Standards. I read them all with great enthusiasm as I am a firm believer in standards as I am convinced they really help bridge the gap between Superintendents, GM's, Golf Professionals, Greens Committees and owners, golfers and even the Assistants and Maintenance teams.
