    Hello everyone,

Just out of interest, how many guys have a greens chairman that takes it upon himself to take out his own stimpmeter to take greens speeds on their courses?

    Thanks in advance.

My greens chairman doesn't even know what a stimp meter is! I only see him during half the board meetings when he is not drag racing. Sorry to bragg but how sweet it is.

I had a chair like that once. Used to use the tape measure to see how far the pins were from the collars. I would get a note every time he played about greens speed a pin location.

I never had a bad green committee chairman at a private club, but I never had a good golf director at a daily fee club. I get the impression that those who become chairmen in South Florida clubs were groomed to those positions. I had one tell me once, "If they stop complaining, you'd better start looking because they have already decided to let you go."

Try not to take it personally...what I have learned is that men (or man-boys) that find it necessary to carry around a "long" stick of some sorts, LACK in an other area.
Heck...I don't even carry a driver in my bag.
    Irons off every tee...

About five years ago I told an incoming president when asked who should be on the green committee that there should be an odd number of people incase the vote gets to be a tie , that the golf course superintendent should be on that committee and that three was too many people. To my suprise he eliminated the green committee.

I don't have a green committee, the golf pro and I both report to the golf committee. They are much more interested in what size ladies clothes are in the pro shop and whether or not the members are turning their cards in than what goes on outside. They even let me give my report first and then I can take off, don't have to listen to the rest of the BS.

Your Golf Committee does not talk to you because you are scary. I know your type. Now stay away!

Why negotiate when you can intimidate?

I have one who complains about green speeds 5 days after a double aeration. Then when we do a project and invite him to participate, he disappears so he's not responsible. Class act this guy.

I would give him one and tell him to post the speeds, tell him that will give you more time to maintain the greens and make them better, faster and more. Of course what you keep in you thoughts should be then kept to yourself.

I have a committee... my Greens Chairs have been good to very good and supportive in my almost ten years. I do attend every committee and Board meeting in their entirety though, as even my best Chairman has made mistakes in conveying information to the rest of the committee or the Board... wish I didn't have to, but it's a necessity!

So then, I guess, life is pretty good!

A good greens chairman can make a world of difference, as can a bad one. I try to convince members who seem to get it to run for positions on the golf commitee. You can make your life a lot easier if you lobby the right people to get involved.

    Regards,

    Steve

    Steve,

That is a great suggestion, and one that all should consider.

I only use it from time to time. Chairman does not really care. During the speed increasing times of the year, he might ask me what they are rolling which is about the time that I am interested myself.

Completely agree and depending on the Chairman and relationship lobby to them for the ones he should consider for the committee. He may not know all the people and be missing out on some you have great contact with out on the course. Has helped me get certain people in his eye for him to approach and talk about their willingness to serve.
