I am headed home to work on a small 9 hole course. I have been on an 18 hole course with a small budget. I recently resigned from after having an accident in the company truck. My question is, what can I expect on a smaller course with less politics.

    Thanks,
    Charlie B.

    I wouldn't expect less politics.

Unless it is owned by a single owner, do not expect less politics.
    Good luck.

You can expect just as much politics and probably more! Not much else different......less equipment, less employees, less money, less everything, except for work! :) Good luck!

    Good luck.

best move I ever made was away from the country club over to the single owner. No politics at all. No stress over a board that can't agree on anything. the way it works is, this is what I want and it's your job to give it to me. There is enough stress growing turf in the summer without the added stress of politics.

    Christopher;

Is this 9 holer private, public, semi-private? Do you have any 18 holers in close proximity to your club? Where is your location?

As far as politics go - It's up to you to keep it at a minimum. The golfers at your course will want a good conditioned golf course. You might be surprised, this golf course especially if it is private, the members will take really good care of you. There is a lot to be said about 9 hole golf courses and many are better paying jobs than some 18 hole courses. It's up to you to take the bull by the horns and show them what you can do.

Have patience, be loyal and don't argue with them. Start of by addressing them as Mr. and Sir. No first names until they tell you to to call them by their first names. Getting back to politics, it never ends. Just kill them with kindness.

I spent 45 years as the super at Needham Golf Club (9 hole) and 34 years as the manager. In my area there are approximately ten great conditioned 18 hole courses within 12 square miles. You know my members have played them all. The greatest feeling one could have when your member comes up to you and says I played such and such golf course and it is absolutely beautiful. But, I have to tell you Captain, Needham does not take a back seat to it.

Good luck and be pleasant and you won't go wrong. If you ever have any questions, you can always e-mail me at ronald.kirkman@verizon.net

P.S. You mention a small 9 hole golf course - Have you ever heard anyone say a small 18 hole golf course?

Remember, there are about 5000 nine hole golf courses in the good ole U.S.A.

Capt. I knew you were old but that old? (Nice post) Although I will say "That's a nice little course" for 18 holers like mine.

    Christopher,
There is nothing wrong with 9 hole golf courses. My first and third (current) job as a Golf Course Superintendent has been a a 9 hole golf course. I got promoted from the 1st 9 hole to a private 18 hole golf course and it was more meetings than being out on the golf course. I did not like that job to much. The company I worked for at that time lost the contract and I ended up applying for a 9 hole facility again and love it. The owners here are great and let me do what is needed out on the golf course. No meeting with the Men's Club or the ownership. I do keep in contact with the ownership when needed. Good luck and no 9 holer is small.

I guess I should have stated that I started my career at this course. Trust me when I say there will be less politics than my previous course. I am leaving a course that has high expectations for the amount of resources they provide. I maintained the prior golf course for 8 years and I still have a funky taste in my mouth from kissing so much a##. I can't wait to get back to some real people with expectations that are with in reason. I put a lot of hours on the machines before and plan on doing it again, only now I can leave my cell phone at the shop.

    Thanks,
    Charlie B.

The entire reason why I got in this business. I love being outdoors, striping up fairways, weedeating, raking bunkers, etc....if I had known the amount of time spent behind a desk or boardroom table when I had taken this job, I might have reconsidered. I can't complain, it is a great gig, but, seems like the only machine I operate anymore is a keyboard.

Good luck to you. My new Assistant came from a 9-hole course. He says it still is a lot of work, but definitely a different type of work. More hands on.
