Here in the north of France, we just experienced the hottest, driest June in 60 years. Today it was over 100°F, setting all time records for the date.

I have members calling for my resignation because my bent/Poa greens are only stimping at 10'6", and they want 12'.

    That's a tough audience.

Do you post your stimp readings or do they stimp them themselves?

I am required to post the Stimps.

Wow, that is tough. I say tell your members to pound salt and become a Uber driver. Wait. Scratch that.

I'm a couple hours east of you in Germany and we are dealing with the same temps. Amazing how dry it has been this year. Thankfully I have newly renovated bent greens and nobody giving me grief about stimp readings. Hang in there Stephen.

I would tell you to lie to them, but that would be wrong.........right?

Try mowing and then double roll if you have the time, you can even skip mowing a day but double not single roll. Give it a try maybe if you haven't already.

I assume you have already done this, but here in NC its not uncommon for a Super to put out a friendly message to the membership explaining to them that bent greens are in survival mode and maintenance practices will be changing to ensure the longevity of the greens. Not to mention anything above 90 is too damn hot to play golf, so members should be in the pub enjoying the AC.

I am tempted to lie, but every once in a while somebody doesn't believe what I tell them and wants to check it with the stimpmeter. If I get caught exaggerating the speed, it would be like cheating at golf. My credibility would be shot, and no one would ever again believe anything I say. In fact, I usually understate the speed by a few inches to be sure my figures hold up to scrutiny.

I am well acquainted with all the techniques to enhance green speed, and I have written expansive essays to the members time and again to try to explain the physical limits of Penncross and Poa. My reason for posting here is to vent on the injustice and indignity of it all.

We all feel for you Steve. We are all in a similar boat to one degree or another. I was an expert for about the first 3 years of my time here.(roughly coinciding with the people who hired me's board tenure" After that I became an over paid grass cutter. It's tougher in your situation because "loud, slow speaking experts for hire" are likely more difficult to come by.It's amazing how you can have someone from the outside come in and say exactly what you have been saying, but all of a sudden they hear it

They're the same people that complain in the clubhouse that the food is unfit for human consumption and that the pro shop doesn't carry their old lady's size in oversized lampshade hats. A bunch of entitled whiners.
It really is too bad that the staff of a club doesn't get to collectively remove one member a year from the roster. You wouldn't necessarily have to do it, but the threat would always be there. Hammy used to always say that the Superintendent should get one free kill a year.

i was getting assaulted with a stimpmeter last year... we had a kid who qualified for the us open come play our resort course in northern MN and he said that the greens were too slow, just happened to be good friends with the owners of the resort. They told me to sacrifice health for speed, and thats what we did. i am sure you have let your members know that you can have fast greens, if you have concrete. we have penncross/poa here as well but not anywhere the weather extremes your dealing with. If it was me, I would be relaying to them that if they want the greens at a 12, they will suffer and the longevity of the greens will be in jeopardy. my 2 cents

Quite right, Aaron. It's a similar situation for me. they had the French Open last week at Le Golf National down the road from us, and the greens there were at 12', but they have the luxury of 50 staff and volunteers and a fleet of rollers, including some cricket pitch rollers, and they can just keep rolling the greens until they're like pool tables. I habve a few prominent local low-handicappers who come to our place and make comparisons.

I'm keeping my greens alive and healthy first, and so far resisting the pressure to shave them down, and I'm disregarding the pathetic, whining, pampered, panty-waists who don't have the strength to get a putt uphill against the grain.

Maybe they'll fire me, but when I leave the greens will be alive. If I wipe out the greens to gain speed, I'll have everyone mad at me, not just a few, they'll fire me for sure, and I'll be looking for a job with dead greens at the top of my résumé. Slow greens is a subjective opinion, but there's no arguing with dead greens.

A Director of Maintenance for a management company I worked for at the time told me one day..."Slow grass is better than fast dirt."
