It is that time of year and this year is going to be the hardest for all superintendents that want to attend the GCSAA show in February 2012. I know each year I submit a small memo that justifies my trip and expenditure.
The education classes give me new insights into turf maintenance. I get caught up on the latest new chemicals and fertilizers that are on the market. The ones that really work and the ones that just cost.
New grass varieties, the testing and growth in real conditions, often by the people that did the development of same.
Budget items and ways to save on all aspects of our own individual operations, talking to others in similar clubs and environments.
Equipment, from parts for repair from original manufacturing to will-fit items that sometimes must be used because of cost or age. Looking at new technology, in equipment design and safety on golf courses.
Peer interaction with other that may have similar conditions and solutions to problems that we all have from time to time.
These are just a few of my justifications for the Turf show. If others will share then maybe with others help we may get a few people to go that otherwise might miss out.

My wife is thinking about who can watch the boy for the week, if the City lets me go.

I will try to point out something I picked up at a previous show and how much it saved us, and many of the other items Keith mentioned. I also will point out how many educational points I will earn toward my recertification.

One time in Atlantic City I hit on 19, well I was looking at an 8 and Ace, and was adding up to 9, so I took a hit. It was a 2, that's when I realized what I did. The whole table except my ex got up and left. She probably would have too, but since I had the keys. (Thank goodness it was only a $2.50 table.)

The past few years haven't required any justification on my part. During the economy prat fall, our operation banned travel. They will cover registration and education but I have found enough value where paying out of my pocket for travel, food and lodging is worth the expense. I have also played in the tournament because I feel mixing with your peers is so valuable. I feel the value far out weighs the expense. I did skip Orlando last year and probably will next visit as well. I have been there too many times and the place bores me.

Hmmmm, I wonder what happened to my and Petey's posts? Is there someone out there that doesn't like the idea of my wife going to the GIS? Or is it they were mad that Pete told me to lie to my wife? Although, I'm sure the real answer is one of the following:

A - they were mistakenly removed

B - yet another numbskull participant complaint

C - my wife hacked into the HQ server and removed them

D - the GIS and anything associated with it, such as a forum topic, is not to be messed with

That does require an explanation, Clay. I anxiously await it.

If anything, they shoulda' deleted Mel's post before everyone found out he hit a 19.

    Hi guys!

Feel free to bring your wife with you to Las Vegas or not! Your choice.

The posts in question were removed due to the expletives they contained. In this thread, the post with expletives was quoted a few times subsequently, so several posts were removed. In cases where symbols are used to represent expletives, our policy is to remove them if it's clear what that word is supposed to be. Normally, in place of the deleted post, we add a reason for why the posts were deleted. In this instance, we mistakenly did not include that explanation. In the future there should always be one.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks,

Thank you Darcy for trying to cover for me, but I am a big guy and I can handle these guys. Pete, your punctuation was atrocious and it obviously makes you mad for months if someone changes it, so I complained and Darcy graciously removed your post.

Well that explains it. I will be more careful with my use of hieroglyphics. I am relieved to learn that my wife did not hack into the HQ server.

BTW, hey Keith, I am sorry for omitting you as one who was also deleted and for dragging you down with me and Pete. Gutter dwelling isn't all that bad though...

    Keith,

GCSAA is constantly looking for new topics and speakers for the GIS. Being a speaker covers your registration for the conference, but you will still need to get there. I am speaking this year on the show floor, and using Bayer points to cover the flight and hotel fees. Normally, my club would pay for this. This year, due to location, I had to cover some other way. By doing it this way, the cost is negated, and then you only have to beg for the time to go. Offer your experience and insight to GCSAA and see if they roll with it.

My wife and I convened to discuss her name-calling. She will not concede to the use of Meany Butt. She feels the other word(s) offer a better description and visual of me. However, we are making headway with her using the word Richardwad in-place of another affectionate name for me.

My wife says you are welcome to use meany butt to describe me. As a matter of fact, she encourages it. The word Richardwad is growing on her so you can't use that one.

    Keith,

This may not help you for this year but when for the next time you leave. I work for a municipality and even though we operate as a enterprise fund getting out of state travel approved is a huge hassle. In the entire county I am the only who has ever gone anywhere more than once and they have paid my way 7 times in 14 years. I only ask them to pay every other year and half of the off years I pay my own way and remind them every time I pay my own way.

When I return from GIS while the info is still fresh in my head I write up a one or two page summary with bullet points the county board will view quickly as valuable and mail it not only to my committee but the entire county board.

I have had a number of board members thank me for my report and I assume it is the reason I am able to get trips approved with no debate.

    Pete,

I'm hoping the casino's see my post and pay my way. Maybe I need to Captain to come along and school me.

I think the Capt would only help instruct you where to put in the quarters and show you how to pull the one-armed bandit.

I could help you add to 21, though.

    Mel - Pete;

I will be there the week before the conference. We are staying at the MGM and comped a mini suite for 9 nights, food, except for the real expensive restaurants and a limo to and from the airport. We could have gotten the same deal at New York New York and the Monti Carlo. The same deal would apply if we were there the week of the conference.

Capt. will you need a helping hand at the trade show this year? I plan on going and my wife will insist on staying at the MGM grand since she loves watching the lions they have on site. I guess that is better then watching the slot machines though.

My second ex-wife won $12,000 playing craps in the Excalibur Casino in about 90 minutes. In the same amount of time I won $1000 betting on horses. We lost about $4000 back and ate really well, but we still left way in the black. I live within 30 minutes of all kinds of legal gambling activity, but the only place I like to gamble is Las Vegas.

I knew the mafia controlled Las vegas would have my post pulled as it was anti gambling (in vegas only)...I told you so/.
