When in consideration for a job change what are some of the items you have been able to negotiate other than salary?
    Thanks for your response

Careful. I was once offered a pretty good job at a pretty good salary, company truck, vacation, holidays, etc. I tried to negotiate for a higher salary, and was immediately told over the phone "we thought the salary was pretty good, Pete. Good luck in your future." Click.

Moral of the story? First make sure they are willing to negotiate.

Almost anything can be negotiated. Vehicles, cell phones, clothing allowance, housing, retirement, association dues, additional time off, and fully paid insurance are the most common items given to superintendents. Less common items I have seen include tuition for private school, spouse / family travel to conference, sporting equipment (ex. golf clubs, balls, etc.), and vacation packages.

It's a different world now a days. If your happy with the salary, I would ask if any other benefits are available like performance bonus, family paid health, gas etc. If they didn't bring it up during your interviews then they might be thinking that the salary is all they want to pay. I would approach this cautiously.

If you apply for the job and the benefits and pay are shown on the posting, you're telling the employer "Hey, I am applying, therefore I am willing to work for what you're offering." Anything more than that and you may be turning them off to you. Employers will typically find someone to work for what they are offering.

I would be leary of negotiating anything unless I was being sought out by them, or if I'd been there a while and had built some trust and was of obvious value.
There's a lot of young talent out there who'll work for peanuts who have less to lose than you do.
