Sitting in my office early Saturday morning, listening to the Walter Reeves show (lawn and garden show) on the radio, got the gears turning in my head. I am amazed at the lack of knowledge from most callers that call in about turfgrass. It makes me wonder if there is a market for consulting those homeowners that want to do the work themselves but simply just don't have the knowledge. Out of curiosity, is anyone already providing consulting work like this (building programs, purchasing and delivering the products and monitoring results)? Is anyone operating any other side business utilizing your expertise?

I ran a lawn service in 2010. Your expertise will be highly received from your customers, due to the fact that you are in the Golf Course Industry. I changed my applicator license to commercial which required me to have insurance. I did a lot of new lawn grow-ins and weed and feed applications. I didn't get rich of off the extra business but I was able to purchase a lot of equipment that I still own and was able to provide an individual with full time work. My BOD did not necessarily care for me having a side business so I left it alone the second year. That being said I have a lot of equipment and some knowledge of the business that I would be able to get started quickly if something were to happen to my job at the golf course.

    Best of luck,

I have a side business. The landscape industry is a hell of a lot bigger and more consistent than the golf industry. To make a living, you need to do the work yourself, like most small businesses, but in the event of a job loss in golf, this is a good backup.

It is illegal for you to give advice unless you possess a commercial/residential applicators license. For instance, a private RUP licensed Superintendent is not allowed to advise Joe Homeowner, also his Green Chairman, who lives on the 18th hole, what to spray for the Brown Patch in his yard when Joe asks him to look at it on his way by.

Not in Florida. We can advise all we want, but when it comes to the actual application, the Category 24 license allows us to apply as long as the land owner purchased and supplied the product and equipment. If we are supplying the product and equipment, we can only apply to within 10' of any occupied structure.
