This pond is about 15' from the next photo. As you can see this duckweed has turned red while the other one is green. Anyone out there know why this has happened? I noticed it started doing this about 2 years ago.

Green is duckweed, red is not. It's probably Azolla.

It was green before it turned red.

Is it red on top and green underneath? I'm willing to bet it's Azolla.

Pete may be correct about the weed but forever this time a year I have seen the same occurrence of the duck weeds in Bayou Jacob that borders the course on one side. Come late July, August every year it changes color.......when the members ask I say we just dye it for added early fall color. And you have better get your ducks in a row!

Sure that's not just the bayou version of fall color?

The thing is that the duckweed in both ponds is the same because the pictures were taken from one pond on my right side and then taken the other from my left side without moving. The area I am standing on when I took the picture gets about 1'-2' of standing water when it floods so both ponds are flooded at the same time as one great big pond developes. the duckweekd simply floats wherever the wind takes it. It is only that one section that really turns red. I wonder if some of the past course issue may be the true cause because at one time we had a septic sewer system in place and the out flows were leaching into this pond for probably 30 years. It may be possible for extra high amounts of nitrates to be involved.

I do like the fall color

I don't know what it would cost you to take it to a weed scientist for a positive ID, but I'll at least buy you a 12-pack of your favorite beer if it ain't Azolla.

A bit larger, puffier, almost meaty compared to Duckweed. Pink to red on top, green underneath. Also known as Mosquito Fern.

Yes, Randy said we were right and you were wrong. Just forward the beer to me........Michelob Ultra will work......if pressed for time I can wait until San Diego.

Just wanted to update, hurricane Isaac washed every bit of this weed out of our ponds when we flooded. My ponds are pristinely clean for the first time in 8 years and it costed me $0 in chemicals to get rid of it. Mother Nature at her best!
