As most of you know, I am way left on the political spectrum. The idea of war for the sake of regime change and nation building seems like a complete waste money and life to me, while the idea of health care and education seems like a complete waste of money to my brothers on the right. I understand that we are diametrically opposed in terms of our thinking, but every once in a while we should acknowledge our common ground. We both consider ourselves patriots, we will both willingly give our lives and our treasure for our country, when the S hits the fan we have each other's backs - we are all Americans first.

Did you have an epiphany this morning or what?

I thought everyone had epiphanies on Sunday mornings. I hate it when I think everyone is with me and it turns out I am the only one.

PS: What's up with your avatar Ron?

Just as Keith and I find common ground on rare occassions I cannot disagree that we are Americans first and the nation is above politics. Now if we could actually elect some decent politicians we might be on the road to recovery. Sending the same ones back year after year is merely the definition of insanity......the result will not change.

I agree with David too. Now if we can get the rest of the people out there to pay attention and hold people accountable. Or maybe if we got better candidates. Heck there are more then a dozen people on the forum I would vote for (and they all lean further right then I do) over the yahoos we keep sending.

The USA cannot be a world peace keeper. I think we can have some bases overseas and be on the ready but to fight other's wars is not right. I can see us helping with the Global forces in the United Nations but why should we commit 30,000+++ and many countries send 10 people 20 people as non-combatants. The UN is in NY-NY and maybe it should be an island not in any one country. I read that we spend 10X what the nearest other country spends and we also spend more than all other countries combined.
Right now the National debt is over $46,000 per person in the US. I cannot even comprehend a trillion, let alone a billion. (One trillion dollar stack would be 67,000 miles high, fairly near to one third the distance from the Earth to the moon). We don't need a space program just pill up the money and walk to the moon! And yes I think we need a good space program.
Social Security and Medicare should not be counted because these are self funded programs that if left alone will operate fine for many years to come. Medical costs are too high but that should be a new post.
We need to stop (most) all government overseas travel, They want to go let them take vacation and pay for it.
We need term limits on Congress with a break if they want to get back in again. They should all reside in their home states and have nice apartments in DC. (I am in government housing and my unit is 480 sq ft. and married with family get a little more). Each state should pay for their own people in Congress. The President lives in the white house as he should, and he does need AF 1 for some travel needs. He does not need 2 -3- 4 planes to carry others. If the press wants to follow rent a plane. Speaker of the house the VP and the President. Two out of the three need to be in the DC area at all times.
Congress needs to be present for 100% voting and if they do miss they "best be in the hospital".
It may take 20 years to balance the budget and with all journeys they start with one step. That is vote.
As voters we are the only ones that can change this.

And yes I'm a little left of center.

Scott, many times the right and the left are closer than they realize. I agree we shouldn't be involved in many of the wars or police actions we tend to get into. I think the only main difference is that those on the right feel that once the decision is made, it is important to show solidarity and win quickly rather than allow it to become political and provide fodder for our enemy. The North Vietnamese were nearly toast until they gained such great confidence from our press and a divided country. I don't think anyone on the right has any problem with looking for a sustainable answer on health care. We just want something that isn't taken over and screwed up by the government. Their financial track record is one of broken bloated programs, not solutions. We certainly are pro education but again our problem is with the poor track record of government schools. A private school can have more students per class for less dollars per student and succeed. Public schools have proven that the more money you feed it, the less productive they become. Teacher unions around the country damage school production rather than help. The bigger the beast becomes the less the students learn. In California, we just passed a law requiring the contributions of gay and lesbians be taught all the way down to kindergarten. How about if we just teach social studies, no color, no sex, just history and how it happened and impacted our country. Our problem is how these things are executed and how much wasted is added. It is just two ways of looking at the same issues and I am not sure we can ever change that!

Two excellent post's by Keith and Sandy (btw Keith thanks for the space program plug lol). Cannot disagree with anything either of you said. The biggest problem between the left and right (let me preference my comment with most on the left & right) is the disagreement on how to achieve some common goals. There are some on both sides with agenda's. I want to think the majority have the same interest of our nation at heart but at times you wonder.

Mel I will tell Tracy you are pushing him to run for Congress from the great state of Arkansas. Sure he will be thrilled.

I did hear yesterday some wacko professor from the University of Southern Main........Professor of Feminists Economics.........give me a break pleeeeeeeeeze. Is this being disguised a Shopping 101? I digress, her comments were that within the bowels of the capital complex there are some low level accounting clerks with a few keystrokes on the computer can make the debit and deficit disappear. Yep those are the folks teaching your young minds full of mush. The sad part is she probably acutally thinks if you make it disappear on paper that it's really gone. I wonder if she throws her credit card statements in the shredder and consider them paid in full?

Heck, Tracy's first act in office will be to force the SWC back together and then he will merge Arkansas and Texas into one state.

Thanks for the link........hope shes not running for office. We got plenty like her there already.

Mel I think a merger of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas is ineviable if Tracy is elected. An economic powerhouse that would dwarf California or New York. Controlling a huge portion of oil, gas and refinery capacity, outlet to the Gulf of Mexico........a rather large population of both legal and illegal workers, home of the Cowboys and world champion Mavericks and would corner the world market on both pig futures and chicken parts....they could become a world power with Peaches as their spokesperson................free "Blizzards" for everyone! A Texas inside joke.
