What method are you all using to remove the reel bearings from the reel for replacement. I have read through the service manual under reel assembly and removal and reel assembly service. I have found that they are press fit on but nothing in how to actually remove them. One that I have is completely gone with only the race left. I have seen someone use a puller at my old job but I can not remember exactly what they did. Also is the special tool from toro actually needed to install these bearings?

    Thanks for your help.

I tore off the outer race and balls to access the inner race. Put one of these behind the inner race

then pull all of it off with

What special tool are you referring to for installation?

This is the best "bearing puller" you can buy. ;)

Thanks for the tip on the puller. Ordered a set from amazon. I ended up cutting a slice in the inner part of the race very carefully because it was seized on the reel shaft. Then tapped it off.

Service manual states reel bearing installation tool is to keep reel bearing aligned when sliding into side plates Guess its not needed because I made do without. (Toro part number 117-0975 for reference)

Seems as though these reels are always tight around the new seals for a while. I assume reel rolling torque is more than 10 in/lbs as stated in serivice manual. Service manual states to install seal dry aound reel. I added marine grease this time as an experiment and they seem to roll better.

I think the 10in/lbs spec was a joke by Toro, and it's not funny. You are right, the alignment tool is not necessary.

I forgot to suggest these to go along with the pullers
    https://www.amazon.com/OTC-Shaft-Protec ... B000RW1XO8

They will prevent a shaft end from mushrooming while using the puller.

I know this is an older post but I rarely visit this site. The very best tool is a # CJ119B from Snap-On. Not real expensive and oh so quick and easy. Drop it over the bearing, spin it with your impact. Three seconds, all done.
I can't be the only one who has used this. Wish I still had those mowers, thought they were the easiest ever.

    Sean,

Are you installing Toro low drag bearings? Are they available for 5410 reels? If you are installing the low drag bearings please tell us how they workout?
