You can play with the adjustment and I would try it with about 1 to 1.5 inches of free play in the pedal. However I like to check my free play at the trans where the lever will press against the throw out bearing. As long as it is fully released it should go, if not the fiber is probably gone from the disc, and the pressure plate and flywheel probably have hot spots on them. I would check at the trans and make sure that the lever is working and moving in full motion before taking anything a part first. Going that far on a clutch repair Id replace the pilot bearing, throw out bearing, disc, pressure plate and have the flywheel resurfaced at a local machine shop.
