We have four Toro Triplexes and Four Fairway mower. How much Time should it take to grind these reels?

That would depend on a few different things. 1. What kind of grinders are you using 2. What condition are the reels and bedknives currently in 3. Are you just spinning them or putting relief on them too

We pi-tape all our units and use SIP-Peerless grinders and we do three JD 8500's in 2 hours and 40 minutes. That's spinning and grinding bedknives, greasing, set and ready to mow. We can do the same with relief grinding and it takes us closer to 5 hours. We're on a grinding schedule as we do not lap, so we grind about every 3 to 4 weeks on fairway units. By doing it this way we don't have to grind as hard and take off so much material, more of just a touch-up grind.

I completely agree with Henry on this. No backlapping or relief, checking the cutting units on greens at a minimum of every two uses, try to get the tee/approach mowers up weekly to check, and fairway units every 2-4 mowings. A light file across the bedknife may get us by another week, but if they aren't cutting paper with the proper space between reel and knife, they go to the grinder for a spin. We use bernard equipment, though a little older as models go, still very easy to use. More often than not, it takes me longer to take the reels off and tear down than to get them cutting sharp and proper again. We try to maintenance grind more often, it takes less time, takes less metal each time, and we maintain a superior cut that way.

Having been in shops that backlap, I think it's faster and lasts much longer to quickly spin a reel and put an edge on a bedknife than running the compounds and cleaning up. All this is relative I suppose depending on staff size and what equipment is in your shop.

I will add that we check all our cutting units after every use, even if it just mows one green. We do grind relief, but only on the heavy section reels such as the fairway units and intermediate mowers. For greens mowers or anything with 11 blade and up we just spin due to blade being much thinner and we will cut the degree on the bedknife back a few degrees more to help with some relief. That is one reason we use the SIP/peerless grinders because we can add relief when needed, generally only twice a year for fairways and roughs, the rest of the time just a spin.
