I recently heard of a super' melting 21-0-0 greens grade in their tank and spraying that as a nitrogen source. I though about doing it for our fairways and was trying to achieve a rate of .1lbs/1000sqft of N. My math comes out to 1.5 bags +/- with a 300 gallon tank at a tank rate of 83 gallons/acre. Has anyone had any experience in melting granular down? If so, does it clog up the nozzles or create scale in the tank? I have used it as an adjuvant for my 15 gallon round up tank and never had any problems. Any information would be great. It seems like 75 lbs of granular in a 300 gal tank is a lot to melt down.

Do it all the time, and your math is correct.

To achieve .1#N/m, use the formula below.

Desired rate / percent analysis x square footage in 1,000's = pounds to apply

    .1 #n/m / .21 x 43.56 = 20.74# per acre

    300 / 83gpa = 3.6 acres

    3.6 x 20.74#ac = 74.66#tank

If you have hot water available, that works best, but is not a must. I usually pour it in the screen, then use a hose nozzle to melt it. Anything that doesn't melt will stay in the screen.

I have done as much as 125lbs with no issues. We have a pre-mix station, but before we had that we used hot water and mixed in pails. Never any issues

I have been melting down 21-0-0 and 21-7-14 Turf Royal since 2001 at 50#/acre. For the last 4 years, I have switched to Turf Royal with Humic Acid on an every other week basis. On the following week after, I go out with 50# of Iron, primo, humic acid and a mixture of products from Helena Chemical Company. This has helped out in healthier greens, less usage of chemicals and only 1 application in February/March for Poa Seed head suppression. I do vertical mow every 2 to 3 weeks and topdress all year round.

according to this chart: http://www.ncagr.gov/agronomi/pdffiles/p7solubility.pdf , you can dissolve a whole lot more than that with no issues. Try doing an internet search for "fertilizer solubility chart".

I have dissolved and sprayed up to .5 lb/N/M of various fertilizers. Dissolving it is the easy part. Not burning the grass is the real consideration to be careful with

Only time I've had issues was when I put 21-0-0 and 0-0-50 together and try to melt, maybe too much in a 175 gallon tank?

Now when I get the chance, I will mix up a 51 lb bag in 140 gallons of water and put down for 2 acres, not very efficient but have not seen burn and no clogging issues. gives me .12 lb of N.

It's a little bit easier with urea, 46% N. If you can go to a feed store and get the urea for animal feed, nice small particle stuff. It really dissolves. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

I melt 46-0-0 UFLEXX all the time in our tank for spraying greens. Never had any issues but did have a problem when melting 50 lbs. of 0-0-50 in one tank plugged the suction screen but no problem with the N.
