For those of you with digital job boards using google chromecast, what suggestions do you have for us moving forward with this. We are looking to buy the tv and chromecast but want to see if anyone has run into any problems with this before we get too far into it. Any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be great. Thanks.

Hey Dave- We have Chromecast for our job board. The only thing that I can recommend is to get a really big tv. We have a 42" and its very difficult to see the assignments from across the break room. Other than that, it's worked great for us. The guys just have to get a little closer to the television during peak season when we have 25 names up there.

    Hope all is well man,
    Ryan

We are in the process of putting ours up now and getting everything setup. Bought a 55" hoping that would be big enough to see. Look forward to getting everything going.

Justin, I'd try to match that 80" you bought for home!

Nobody will ever complain that the TV is too big and they can read the job board too well.

Depending on setup a projector could be the way to go too. You could project onto an actual whiteboard then you can draw on that if needed as well!

So we just got ours up and running and it works better than we expected. We bought a 50" tv and it is perfect for our break room. We have a 16 man crew in peak season. Using google sheets and just having 1 computer casting the sheet via google chrome is all you need. We are able to have our phones OFF the wifi changing the sheet at the same time and google drive automatically changes it and casts it. Very happy with the results. Justin I would definitely imaging your 55" will work well as long as you don't have a giant break room.

Andrew, the 80" I have at home would be very nice for the application but I'll leave that for my sports at home for the time being. Maybe if get my new shop done in the next 3 to 5 years I'll upgrade to a bigger TV for job board and training purposes. I thought about the projection idea but figured to do the TV route so then the guys had something during lunch.

    David,
We got our all set up yesterday and it works great. Very happy with the functionality. Going to have to rearrange our job document a bit but in all it will serve its purpose well. No need to drive back to the facility to change jobs on the board now!

I set mine up late last year and love it. I have a great suggestion for everyone doing it though. When using google sheets with excel I had originally made a main page with everything I wanted and just changed the daily activities. After working with sheets I determined it would be better to build a yearly program with a single excel page working for a whole week (just copy and paste below what you had above). then I used this as a template to build 52 seperate pages of the template. What this did for me is allows me to keep a record of what we do everyday. at the bottom of the page I use an area for anyone missing time and why, paid or unpaid. I will be able to go back into it and see anything I may need to look up from the past. while it took me about 1/2 a day to build it will be worth it in the long run.

Currently we only scroll down to the next day of the week and when the week is over we open the next page for the following week.

We do something similar James but through Google Sheets. I create a new file for each month, then a new page in that file for each day. We keep track of all tasks, special notes, irrigation, weather, etc... Has worked out great for us. Easy to find specific dates as I can just open the month file, then find the exact dated sheet to the bottom. Look forward to evolving our system.

If your using the Chrome browser from a PC, Mac or Chromebook check out the Revolver Chrome extension. It allows you to have open browser tabs change on the TV. This does not work on the Chromecast.

So for instance you can have the job board on one a tab. Maybe a weather website on another tab. And, maybe a Google calendar or an events list on another tab. Set Revolver to rotate tabs at 5 to 10 sec intervals.

This is mine, I used a template that another member had posted to go off of. If you look at the bottom of the page you will see the seperate week tabs.

I like that idea of the week tabs. I hadn't really thought of doing that before.

Robert, I did that so I can keep track of the entire years worth of pages to go back into if needed. At the bottom of each week I also place anyones names that has taken time off and if they were paid for it or not. Now I will have a single folder on my computer to dump the year files into if need be and in google drive each year will show a a seperate page which will help keep that from getting too cluttered.

If anyone likes my spreadsheet and would like it for them selves just post your email address here and I will give you permission to access a template I just made (in google spreadsheets). From that you can copy and paste it into your spreadsheet. Then left click on the bottom tab and press duplicate. you can do this for every week. It can also be broke down into every day but I just found it easier to look for something when browsing one week at a time. Since I will be off this weekend, if you leave your email I I do not get right to it I will get it done on Monday.

I was thinking over the weekend about my DJB and how others are getting into this now.

I would love to get a round table conversation going about what we could do to improve these DJB's!

Maybe we could get input from other members reading this thread and see what we can come up with on improvements. While I may not be a geek at the computer I can generally find a way to get things done.

    James,

Great Job on the job sheets. I know mine were pretty vanilla, you have me wanting to step up the game! The ability to have those tabs at the bottom for easy locating are huge! Great job my friend!

I was originally going to cast my Job Board to the lunch room TV but I opted to purchase a new Smart TV and then ran a Cat 5 cable to it. This way I did not have to worry about a WiFi signal working or not working. We just turn on the TV, go to the Internet and access our Google Drive. We keep the DJB on Google Drive. We usually have 3 guys working on that Job Board at once in the summer time mornings. I give access to superintendents and assistants to edit and make changes to it. I also give access to any staff member that wants to view it from a smart phone. They have viewing only no editing. Having them access it on a big property like ours has really saved some time. They no longer have to travel back to the maintenance facility, they can look before they head in. They might just be able to go to the new job with the tools they already have. Big advantage. Ours is very generic looking but it is clean and easy to read. I have a tab down at the bottom for signage. So if we have a special message to give to the staff we click on it and it is displayed on the DJB.

I have placed a share for your access to my template. Remember that you only need to copy the whole page, go to the bottom and add a sheet then paste your copy onto the new sheet. if you do this 52 times you will have a weekly record of your sheets.

Please let me know if any of you are having troubles building your sheets through Google and I will try my best to help you get it done.

Also if anyone has any suggestions that can make it better please post them. Only through trial and error can we build an even better sheet.
