My greens sprayer is a SDI 160 mounted on a Pro Gator. When I sprayed last week, I got some tip burn on my last 6 or 7 greens. It got me thinking about water temp so when I finished spraying this morning (overcast and high of 74) I measured the temp inside of my tank (120) and the water coming out of the nozzles (107). I know the tank sits directly over the engine and there is no heat shield. Is this the sole purpose of the heating of the water. It was not a chemical reaction because today I only had Honor in the tank. Any help is appreciated.

    Joey,

I used to see the same issues with our SDI tank mounted on a Cushman Truckster. And also noticed some minor tip burn on the last few greens we would spray. The tip burn wasn't with every application, but enough for me to investigate. Our water would get so hot that when you would open the lid, steam would come out.

Sorry, I don't have a remedy, other than maybe dumping some ice in halfway through. A 5 gallon bucket would probably do it without throwing off your rate too much.

This was on our bent in Newnan and on TifDwarf down here in beautiful, cloudy and overcast central Florida.

Thanks Andy. I thought about that and also adding some heat shielding to the bottom of the tank.

107F does not seem like that would be hot enough to burn grass, but in order to heat 6 greens worth of solution you are talking about a lot of energy. Lee Stone used to be the traveling SDI Rep and Principal east of the Mississippi River. I sent him an email and hopefully he will get back with me.

104 F in a hot tub is enough to almost burn your junk. I would think 107 F would do some damage but then again I don't grow that "Abuse Me Grass"

Some products state on the label to spray early when temps are below "x". I bet your on to something. can you locate some heat shield blanket or something similar and do you have room to install? i remember my old spray star would do the same thing. Keep us posted.

SDI has identified some heating issues with the Cushman SprayTek 175 and that was associated with the proximity of plumbing near the engine exhaust. Issues with the John Deere ProGator is news to them. They were able to address the issue with SprayTeks with insulation material. I sold dozens of SDI 160 sprayers on Cushmans in the 90's with no issues.
