I started as the golf course superintendent at Muskegon CC last August. Last fall we had a "bumper crop" of acorns. Unfortunately many of them fell in our fescue areas. Now we have thousands of 6" tall oak trees sprouting up in the fescue areas that do not get mowed down until fall. Does anybody have experience with a herbicide that will kill the oak sprouts but not damage the fescue. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Normally I'd say something with triclopyr (turflon ester) because it's in most brush products (Garlon) but looking at Steve McDonalds work http://turfgrassdiseasesolutions.com/sy ... 0091.8.pdf it looks like triclopyr bangs up fine fescue a bit. So the normal 3-way products are probably best. If you could wait until next year and see what returns after mowing that would be great. Hate to use herbicide in natural areas. Many Oaks "mast" on 7 year cycles and drop a ton of acorns so the next couple of years shouldn't be so bad. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

We use Crossbow to control Woodys in our native grass beds, not sure what it will do to the fescue. It may have the same active as Garlon but not sure. I sprayed some on some volunteer rye this Spring and it didn't touch it a bit, though it dinged the Bermuda underneath pretty good.

Crossbow or the generic version Candor. Won't hurt the fescue

Jeff, there is a chemical that is called "Pathfinder". I used it on about 50 Billion Pepper trees with absolutely amazing results. It may be a little tedious to use on those small sprouts though. It is used by using a paint brush and painting a band around the tree trunk, and within about 2 weeks, a 30' tree is toast. It's also amazing to use on stumps, to prevent regrowth. Good luck.
