To everyone that rolls greens on a regular basis with Triplex rollers: What rolling pattern have you found to be most effective and/or efficient?

Do you follow existing mowing stripes?
Do you create your own stripes?
    Do you firestone them?
Do you create some other random pattern?

    Thanks

    Norma,

We will typically only do 3 patterns of mowing, 6-12, 10-4, and 2-8. Occasionally we mow 3-9. When we roll on a regular basis with our triplex, we will mow the same direction that we would have if we were mowing. Example, if we mow 6-12, roll 10-4, mow 2-8, roll 6-12, mow 10-4, roll 2-8, repeat.

We roll opposite of the day before mowing if we are substituting for a mow, if we are mowing and rolling we roll the same direction we mowed with the walkers that day. However we generally just "pin roll" on days we mow as time is of the essence being a public course. My definition of pin rolling is 2-3 triplex widths on each side of the pin. USGA has concluded that shows golfers cant tell a difference if the entire green is rolled or just the "pin" area.

Often when the dew has been removed by the mowers I will allow the rolling units to find the old pattern and use it as a guide. When we go over and back on the same pass with the mowers for a double cut, its far easier to see your lines on the roller. At that point we will have a pattern of choice.

I try to tell my guys to go the fastest direction which equates to the least amount of turning. The longest direction possible. Maximize the time the machine is at the green by rolling, not turning. Chances that anyone can actually see where they are going without dew is minimal anyhow. It kinda stripes, but not fully. With only one set of rollers, its tough to follow our normal clock pattern for each day and stay ahead of play.

Like others said, rolling around the pin is the biggest thing though.

    Ditto

I was trying to explain our process and after reading your post, you nailed it.
