I like looking at documents, letters, and stationary from the 50's and maybe a little earlier. Knowing that everything was done on typewriters, does anyone know what the common font was back in those days?

Anyone have a favorite font they use today? I kind of like Modern 20, but will usually use New Times Roman or Arial on most of my work documents.

    Thanks, Mel

Believe me Mel I waste a lot of time, just ask my wife, but wondering about my favorite font has never crossed my mind.

    David,

I'm hoping to waste some time creating a letter head for myself, need to send a couple of thank you notes, and I want it to look professional yet, kind of retro/old time.

Nothing beats a good ol'fashioned hand written note.

    Clay,

I'm not opposed to hand writing a note, even if it looks like a doctor's prescription, although I can write pretty good or should I say legible for a short period of time. I would still like to have a letter head printed at the top of the page, like stationary.

    Thanks, Mel

After playing with them today, I am kind of leaning toward Engravers MT, Courier New,and Modern 20 are my favorites.

    Mel,
'Typewriter font' looks like it all falls under "Courier".
Check out dafont.com for more downloadable courier-style fonts. I like Helvicta.

    Speaking of font type,

I was watching Pawn Stars or one of those shows and the expert determined the age of an item based upon the type of font that was used. Needless to say the font on the supposed "antique" item was a newer font type thus making the item an imitation.

    Interesting.

Mel I stand corrected. In my spare time I will contemplate which font I prefer.

    Scott,

I just tried the Papyrus, I think it looks too girly, DMac being a former marine, I don't see him picking that one.

I was thinking Marines separated from their forces having to grind their way from island to island through the South Pacific with homemade weapons. (Actually, the use of Papyrus is overused and people who really follow fonts put up uses of this font when it really shouldn't have as a joke. Like the ending of "Sling Blade" it is only funny if you are in the business. lol)
