I have an Amazon Kindle that I use daily. Over the last week the Kindle has been locking-up and requires a hard reset to bring back to life. I called Amazon and was informed the protective cover is the culprit. I removed the protective cover and have not experienced another lock-up. It turns out certain covers have an effect on the Kindle causing the lock-up. I have no idea why or which covers (other than the one I have) cause this problem. Amazon is replacing my cover at no charge.

If you are experiencing similar problems try removing the protective cover and contact Amazon; you might get a free cover.

I did get the replacement cover and no problems so far. Turns out, according to Amazon, the problem with the original cover were the metal clips that secure the cover to the Kindle. The type of metal in the clip was actually the problem. The new cover has, what appears to be, copper or brass clips.

Clay, is this the Kindle Fire? I am about to take the step into the modern day (i do not have a smart phone or even a laptop, nothing mobile) and get a tablet device of some sort. Looking at the Kindle Fire. All i want is to be able to do some minor web surfing, e-mail, face book and the like, and maybe watc a movie while traveling once in a while. How do you like yours?

Jason Rule # 1.......keep your doors looked and windows up.......other people will love your "very" mobile devices if they can get their hands on them.

    Jason,

You definitely want the kindle fire for the applications you mentioned. The regular kindle is primarily a reader. You can access the web with the regular kindle but the fire is a must better unit for surfing purposes. BTW, keep the kindle locked in a Chrysler Pacifica and it will be safe for life. Don't listen to anything from David or Curtis, they're just jilted Pacifica haters.

    Clay,

I have no idea about the Kindle "Fire". I bought my Kindle about a year ago and did opt for the 3G version. I paid around $186. Never had any problems with the cover. Best investment I have ever made. I was spending $30 a month for new hardbacks, and my "library" was getting out of control. I little leery at first.....but absolutely love it now. The cover gives me a sense of safety....and even though almost always folded back, never a crack in the seam. Can't imagine why a cover would cause the Kindle to lock up? But holding, they claim, 1500 books is a nice feature. Can't imagine going back to "real" books. Okay, that's unfair.....they are "real". Again, LOVE IT!

Yeah, I'm luv'n the heck out of my kindle too. Read it every night. We got our kids kindles too for Christmas and they're digging them too. My son has the fire. I have played around with it and it really is a cool devise.

Turns out the problem with the original cover was the type of metal used in the clips that keep the kindle attached to the cover. The metal would, in essence, short the circuitry and cause the lock-up. Amazon sent me a new cover at no charge. The new cover has, what appears to be copper or brass clips. I have been using this new cover for quite awhile and no problemo.

Bought a couple of books recently from the Kindle store for .99 cents.........hard to match that price on the sale rack at Barnes and Noble.

How about books that have pictures, do they show up well on a Kindle? I wonder how my "The Complete Book of Mustang, Every Model Since 1964 1/2" would look? Hey a boy can dream can't he?
