A higher megapixel camera will allow you to blow up a photo without distorting the photo much. If you are simply snapping and printing, a lower megapixel works just fine. A lot of the photo quality is also related to the type of paper and printer you use. If you are simply wanting to take pictures to use on your computer, you can do just fine with a 10-12 megapixel(or lower) camera.
That being said, I run the Canon EOS 60D with 18 megapixels. I rarely print my photos, typically just use them for presentations and documenting. However, I still also carry a pocket sized Canon Power Shot with 12 megapixels as this camera provides less heartache when dropped out of a Carry-all. Both Cameras work just fine and I doubt any of us could tell a difference between the two's photo quality.
