David, what about Gov. Romney's comeback, we don't need more police, fire fighters, and teachers? Good middle class jobs, if they are worried about pensions and the like long term, make changes to the plans now. We did it in our city. Those are the people we should be hiring, not the 2nd or 3rd assistant city managers, parks directors, and the like when we are talking about government workers. We aren't going to improve our educations system either to keep up with the other countries.

Just saw up in Michigan, they passed a voter id law, enough democrats stood up in the one house and protested when the republicans said they want it to start immediately, instead of the normal time frame. The republicans just ramrodded it anyway. There were enough no's that it should have been stopped. Why? Why couldn't it wait until after this election? I haven't heard there was a mess of voter fraud up there? If they want to change something fine, even take it to the voters, but do it properly, there were enough no's to stop it from being implemented immediately. Why I can debate the merits and needs of voter id this and what's happening in Florida seem to be all for politically reasons. If it wasn't why not wait until after this election.

What about Jeb saying his father and Reagan couldn't get elected as a republican? It's on both sides and until people come together and start working on their differences, we will never get this mess straightened out. It will just swing back and forth one way or the other.

Pete I may have some but not nearly enough...........don't recall throwing anyone under any buses unless you call my voting NO on a recent property tax to raise our CATS (capital area transit system) budget from $12,000,000 to $30,000,000 on the backs of only property owners backs. It passed so my property taxes will go up about $300 a year so I would like to throw a few folks under the bus with me driving.

Mel I have always held both parties are at fault but unlike you I vote NO on every incumbent R, D or I........one and done in my books. It takes them 4 years to really learn how to work the system and bend you over and make you think you're enjoying the experience.

So David, if Romney gets elected as President then you will vote for a Democrat in the following Presidential election? I find that very hard to believe.

Mel, if the vote passed what difference does it make when it starts? The only reason you would want to postpone it is so u can cheat one more time.

As far as those teacher, firefighter, police jobs, they are all important, but they produce nothing for creating more jobs. We need private sector jobs so businesses can prosper and hire even more people. The more people working in the private sector, then ultimately this creates more tax revenue because you expand your tax base. Expanding your tax base allows you to afford to hire more teachers, fire fighters and police officers. More tax revenue leads to more public sector growth, but you cant start it the other way. Public sector growth depletes
    Resources from the private sector

    Dennis,

What are you talking about whose cheating? How much evidence is there that there has been massive voter fraud occurring in Michigan? So why was this even an issue? So the vote was taken, it was passed, then the republicans brought it up to start it immediately, there were enough votes to not allow that, the democrats raised their hands and voiced their no vote, and there was no roll call, the republican leader ignored what the state constitution allows for, (gee I thought republicans want to honor the constitution? I guess it's only the US, screw the state constitution). Why were they so concerned to get this passed immediately, unless you can produce the evidence that massive voter fraud was going on, why could they just let it come on line as it was suppose to?

Why this is a priority is a mystery, I thought the republicans where elected to help create jobs, the only jobs they want to create is for more republicans. Yes you are correct private sector jobs are just as important as teachers, fire fighters, and police. Why aren't the republicans creating legislation for creating private jobs? As for those teachers, fire fighters, and police jobs the issues are they have been getting cut, and that is costing good middle class jobs of people who also pay taxes, buy products and help the economy. When it comes to teachers, without them, students aren't getting the education they need to even do private sector jobs, like engineering and the like. I remember one time last year I saw a story that there was a high tech manufacturing company in South Carolina that couldn't find qualified employees to run their equipment. When are you guys going to get it that public employees are not bad, they are just another part of the economy that provides services that citizens want.

We need private sector jobs so businesses can prosper This may require educated, competent people, But I suppose teachers have nothing to do with that. I don't see too many start ups rusing to the crime ridden cities of Detroit and Flint, maybe public safety is a factor in job creation, perhaps police do contribute something to economic growth

Except that public sector spending brought the country out of the Great Depression, won the Second World War, and linitiated the greatest economic boon the nation had ever seen in the 1950'S. Except for that, yeah, it doesn't do any good.

    James,

Good point, hard to say what is more important among those three employee groups, but I'm sure safer and less crime allows school districts to recruit better teachers.

Better schools do factor in location, we had a choice of living in the northern part of the Springfield district or southern, along with some towns located outside of the city with about six choices. My wife researched them all before they moved out here from Indiana, (had to sell that house, luckily back in the good old days of 2004) and found the Southern part of Springfield and two outlying cities met her/our requirements. Good schools are important for encouraging business to move in, along with safe streets, and then incentives from local and state governments. Good fire departments save people and business on their insurance premiums. When we were facing the pension issue here in Springfield, the fire department was facing a possible downgrade on their ISO rating, it would have cost the residence more money in insurance, probably another reason the pension sales tax was passed.

Dennis while it sounds like a good argument that more private sector jobs will lead to the need to more public sector jobs, as stated above, I believe it seems like they go more hand in hand. There are other "public sector resources" that are needed to encourage new business, like tax incentives, infrastructure improvements (which government provides in many different ways, but usually comes down to private companies doing the work).

Steve, some of these people don't remember back that far to the 50's, and they didn't read about it in their history books, of course teachers are probably to blame.

Mel I remember the 50's quite well since I am a little older than you. No teachers are not the blame but school boards, politicans and political corrrectness 101 has a lot to do with what is or is NOT taught in schools today. We as a society are more concerned with someones feelings than we are telling them the truth or actually teaching them the facts of history. It's misplaced guilt on the liberals part.
