Anyone use John Deere 7700 fwy units? We have a pair and I cannot get the cutting units below .500". We went with a thinner bedknife as suggested by JD but the front roller is as far up as it can go so the only thing that changes is the pitch of the unit. I am confused. I know there are more guys mowing under .500". Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Can you advise which cutting units you are using; QA5 or QA7 and what size front roller, 2" or 3"

Are the reels worn out? As they wear, it reduces your low end of the cutting height.

Im not sure which QA5 or 7. They do have a 3 inch roller. I thought if we went with a 2" roller the grooves are extremely shallow there for we would lay the grass over more. We need to get the grass upright as possible.

They look to be ok with aprox .5" - .75" blade left out from spider.

QA5 is the quick adjust 5" reel, QA7 is a 7" reel. My next question is are these the QA reels or the older style? I'm "guessing" since you are stating 7700 it has the newer style QA reels?

Oh, sorry. Yes they are the quick adjust and they are the QA7 reels.

A few questions, since I don't know these style reels....

    1. Can you adjust the back roller?

    2. How many blades on the reels? The Deere website says that the 8 and 10 bladed reels can go under .500" with a 3" roller, but the 5 bladed reel can not.

I don't know why you can't get it to cut under .500". All I can say is that we have that issue when either the wrong height of cut adjuster is on the mower (one for high cut, one for low cut) or the reel is worn out. Otherwise, I've had fairways units as low as .350" when they are brand new, but as the reel wears, we keep having to adjust up.

These mowers are only 2 years old and are 8 blade reels. If we raise the rear roller more the pitch will be off causing the reel unit to lean back and be at an angle that cuts less grass and simply rolls it over.

John Deere sent one of their tech's in to go over the machine with my mechanic and we were able to resolve the issue. In fact, once we went from a 12mm bedknife to the 9mm bedknife there was no trouble getting the heights down w/out messing the up the pithch. It simply took a different set of eyes to show us what we were missing. I must say I am pleased with John Deere's prompt response on this issue. Thanks to all who helped!
