   Is there a minimal reel width for a national and toro 5400.I am not able to get the grinding finger past the welded frames on either cutting unit.Any info on this would be helpful

   Minimal reel diameter for the 5400 series with 7" reels would be 6.600", 5" reels would be 4.500", National mower 84 or 8400 mowers don't list any specifications. The reels on those adjust down to the bedknives so don't be afraid to grind them down almost to the spiders.

   There is a maximum wear limit, but you need to remember that the lower you mow the less of the reel you actually get to use. Due to our mowing heights, we change out greens reels when they hit the low 4.7's on the Pi Tape, and fairways get changed out when they measure 4.6. I have had reels in the past trying to mow at 100 to .090 with ultra thin knives on them and dragging and the reel still had what appeared to be a lot of life left in it. That's when I started setting limits for our rebuilds / change outs. This way we maintain consistent cutting units and a good quality of cut without needing to worry if we can go lower or not.    Do you guys or gals have a rule of thumb on when to re-place reels for jac. 322 units. Seemed easier to judge on toro machines. We spin grind w/ dual express and have lost all relief. I would love to be able to put relief on again but lost the ability w/ newer grinders. They sold the old ones.

   I would ask your Jac tech rep. unless it is in your manual.
   
   Our Deere tech rep told us to measure the amount of reel blade remaining out from the spider. Off the top of my head I don't have that number. A few years ago we couldn't get a few units set up after the grinding and asked him. Upon measuring we found that those reels were done so we replaced them. No problem after.

    Should be a minimum spec in manual . 5" usually 4.5" but if you spin grinding only you can get away with s bit more at higher HOC . Greens HOC you don't have much wiggle room . Our jD 2500 have the option to flip the bed bar mount
