We have a full ESD system installed in our new facility. Wondering what the regular maintenance norm is. We usually clean out the 2 pits weekly or bi weekly along with the 2 tanks below the clipping separator. Its seems we waste and have to remove a lot of the water in the process, which in terms would release some microbes. How often is enough? We are pretty good about keeping sand/dirt out of the system due to the fact that the ESD has no answer for either of these.

Any feed back would be great.

We have two systems that are now over 10 years old. There's a small one in the cart barn that all they do is add bugs as they don't generate debris, so the tanks don't need cleaning.

The big one in the shop requires some. We flush the tanks once a week but it really isn't much - less than a 5 gal bucket total. Basically we just crack them until the heaviest stuff falls out. We usually start the system with 4 bottles of bugs and then top it off once a week with one bottle.

We did put the fine mesh grate over the sump so the clippings collect on top. It works best for us as it prevents a lot of solids entering the system. Its easy to shovel the clippings off the top of the grate an throw them in the trailer. It kinda defeats the purpose of having the clippings pumped up but it certainly has helped the last few years with keeping the system running well.

We use fine mesh as well to keep as much debris from entering system. Aerifiers and topdressers are washed off elsewhere to keep sand/soil out of system. Requires daily attention to keep operating, little every day and more thorough at least once a week. We contract monthly service to cover all bases. 36-hole operation, system is about 8 years +/- installed. Sprayer rinsate not treated with this system.

When I had an ESD all we did was shovel the clippings off the grate, change the mesh screen on the waterslide and dump bugs in once a week. About once a year we drain and flush the tanks and start over. Really was a pretty simple system IMO.

Now that we have a Carbtrol here, I have been utilizing the best of both systems. We wash everything down the hole (no shoveling), then use an ESD mesh cloth on the waterslide to catch the debris before it goes into the trailer. I am fortunate to have ESD located right across town and know the guys pretty well. One of these days I'm going to have them engineer a system for my new shop that is comprised of the best of both systems.

We have an ESD system and we clean it daily to prevent it from smelling and to keep it in good shape. Every Friday is a deep clean draining the main tanks until the heavy stuff is out (5 seconds or so) cleaning the pits out and putting in bugs. We use the fine mesh screen and also wash off topdresser, etc in another area to minimize sand into the system. We also have an air blow off station to reduce the amount of clippings that go through the system. We pay for the service contract as well so they visit and check everything out once a month. System is flawless when it's taken care of.
