Today I had a 70 yr old Maple removed that was 7 yards away from the green. Years previous the back part of the green died where the roots were taking all the water from the green. Now that it is removed and the stump grinded is there anything I can do to speed up the process for the roots to die. I was told by my tree guy that the roots will slowly die but will take some time. Does this mean I will have the same problem with the green this year? How about injecting Tardon into the stump? When the roots take the Tardon in, will that cause the turf to die also? Is there anything else out there that will cause the roots to die but not the turf?

Any suggestions or comments is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Virgil

    Virgil,
I've removed quite few large trees in close proximity to tees or greens. I stump ground them as deep as possible. I don't remember having an issue with water withdrawl from the remaining roots. Since there isn't a canopy demanding the water, I wouldn't expect it to be competitive with the turf. One thing to keep in mind is that the turf in that area has adapted to the conditions. Now that you removed the tree, you've changed the growing environment. You likely find any Poa to be a little more sensitive to sun and heat stress than you'd expect.

I agree not to worry much about the left over roots other than you may find that you get some fairy ring in the future due to the decay process.

The roots will fade away. But be aware of "sunburn" in those turf areas. Not the scientific term, but a fact of removing large trees.
