I have recently taken over as the Superintendent at a course where I have worked as the Assistant Super and Assistant Professional for the past 15 years. The question I have concerns aeration and whether waiting until the middle of July could be difficult for greens to bounce back in the warmer temperatures (Daytime 85 nighttime 50). In the past we have always aerated in the middle of June with more ideal daytime and nighttime temps (75-45). The head professional (who was also my boss last season) wants to wait until July after our Pro-Am. I would appreciate any suggestions/help that anyone may have regarding this matter.

Always include your location, turf type to get the answers you want.

Also what method of aerification do you plan to do? There is a huge difference in heal up time between 1/4" tines and 5/8" tines or pulling cores, solid tining or DryJecting.

We pull 1/2 inch cores on bentgrass greens. I am located in Spring Creek, Nevada. It is a high desert area in Northeastern Nevada.

    Travis,

You'll be fine if your temps are in the mid-80s and you take care of the heal-in process. It looked like last year in July your temps reached into the 100's, at least according to Accuweather. I've aerated greens in the high 90's to low 100's years ago and never had a problem but it's a risk. No two situations are alike.

You can always schedule the aeration and monitor the weather. Skipping an aeration if the weather doesn't cooperate won't be the end of your career but forcing an aeration in 100 degree heat could be.

When in doubt and conditions aren't favorable it's always better to do less.

Thank you so much for your suggestions, Ron! I may wait until August or September if the weather is too hot in July again. Thanks again!

You can always solid tine if you have to reschedule the core aeration process. A consistent small solid tine program can be very beneficial and hardly noticeable if done properly.
