I've been refurbishing a greens master 3100. Has a new 21 horse gas motor. It has loads of power in transport gear and on perfectly flat ground seems to mow OK, however on any incline it loses power to the wheels. Engine stays at rpm but the wheels come to a stop. I've got the flow adjustment screwed in as far as it will go. I'm at a loss as to what to look at next. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

You may want to check the forward and reference adjustment on the traction pedal. My machines were doing that last year and it was a simple adjustments. Review the operators manual for adjustments.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately that was the first thing I tried. Thank t is why (I think) it goes so fast in transport gear.

Is the unit 2wd or 3wd? block the unit against a wall and push the traction pedal slowly do both front wheels try to spin or only one? Does one attempt to spin and the other does nothing? if a wheel motor is bypassing internally under load it will show.

So it only does this in No.1 (mow speed) where it won't climb hills? If it only does it in No.1 but No. 2 and reverse are fine then sounds like possible pump section or leakage between section 3 and 4 of valve bank. You really need to put a flow meter on pump first or I if you don't have access to one you can do a field test by switching hoses from pump sections to see if the first pump section is bad.

I blocked it against my lift and put it mow. On the concrete only one tire spun. Should both spin isn't there sort of a differential that would make only one wheel to break traction?

Does the other wheel try to move at all? do you notice and difference turn hard Left and hard right. possibly indicating wheel motor bypassing internally

No both front wheel motors hydraulic flow is from one section of valve bank that T's to both front wheel motors so the fluid would take path of least resistance which would be one tire slipping. Idk how much pressure it would actually take to slip the tire on smooth concrete vs load pulling up a hill. Before it slips the tire does it put the hydraulics and engine under a pretty good load like bog down and lower engine rpm's? Doesn't make sense that it will overpower a tire but not climb a hill other than tire on smooth concrete may not take much to slip.

So it will climb a hill fine in No. 2 (transport)? If so I doubt that it would be a wheel motor.

Is the valve being fully opened when in first gear?

So I made it so the wheel that was able to spin couldn't and by putting down some soap water made it as easy as possible to spin and could not get it to break loose. So without a flow meter to test with would you first tear into the wheel motor or the seal in the valve bank? Again thanks for all your suggestions I'm kind of new to having to repairthis type of equipment but leading fast.

Since I'm not the one that operates this machine I wasn't aware of any other problems. Just went and drove it enough to get it up to temp and try some hills. In second gear evey thing seams fine plenty of power and traction to both wheels.in mow gear and reverse no speed or hill climb power and it seams to free wheel going down hill in mow gear with the pedal depressed more than about 25% it is like it's in nutral. So with this information it is most likely internal valve bank leakage???

I've got the valve body out of the 3100 and about to disassemble. This Will be my first compleat rebuild of this kind. Any tips on what to look for and what to NOT do would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I used to have a couple Toro 3100 that I stripped to the frame and rebuilt. Prior to rebuild, I had 1 that had a very similar problem. I found that when switching from 2nd to 1st, inside the valve body the spool was closer to the the neutral position, allowing bypass thru the valve body and not giving enough pressure to the wheel motors. I made some adjustments and it was better, but still was weak. I removed spool when rebuilding and found excessive wear (unit had about 4,500 hours), I decided to get fully rebuilt valve body from Bel Air Turf. This was about 12 years ago so I do not remember what it cost. Unit ran like new with valve body. I have rebuilt these valve bodies before and they are not to bad as long as it is just seals and o-rings, if I found scarring on spools, it was time to send it out.

Take it easy. do not scar the pieces. careful with seals. might as well replace them all.

We have an old 3100 we've been working on. I tested the pump and determined that something internally was wrong. I took it apart and one of the bearing plate sections was badly scored. I went to order replacement parts but they are no longer available. The only thing I could find is a retrofit pump lots of dollars for an old machine. Does any one know where to find these parts after market. Or maybe someone has one of these machines in their bone pile that might have the parts I'm looking for.

Hello out there. I'm hopeing some one might have some answers for me. I'm working on a Toro greens master 3100. It has been working great until the other day it ran fine all day then after the operator washed it it lost power steering. The main pump is relatively new and seems to be working fine. I replaced the steering ram, and the steering control unit and bled the lines but still no power steering!! I'm at a loss any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
