During the season with wet turf we don't throw grass into the baskets as well as we would like. This improves greatly as turf gets drier. My question is does the shroud position have anything to do with it? On both Toro and Jacobsen units this can vary by more than 1/2". I normally have mine up and as open as possible. Perhaps this is wrong?

Jacobson manuals say to Loosen nut on each end of grass shield and adjust grass shield as close to reel blades as possible without making contact.

OK here is a question on this issue I ran across today. Working on Toro fairway unit model 03661 I have 5 units with a "cut off bar" that is mounted to the frame above the reel . I also have 5 units without this bar. Looking in my parts book this cut off bar is not listed on the parts breakdown. Talking with my Toro parts guy we discovered it is part of a basket kit model 03662. Apparently the use of this kit eliminates the upper shield and the plastic deflectors. We do not collect clippings on fairways.

So I was always told that you should lower the cut off bar (or shield) as the reel wears. If this is true why is the cut off bar an option here? Possibly the closer the cut off bar to the reel the less distance the grass travels in front of the reel.
Thinking it is not needed if not collecting clippings.

The cut off bar controls the ejection angle of the grass clippings as they exit the cutting unit. Having the bar closer to the reel will result in the clippings traveling further forward, ie deeper into the basket, while increasing the space will allow them to gain more height and disperse more. Yes, I would remove them if you are not collecting clippings. I believe the plastic deflectors are installed to help spread the clip over the width of the unit instead of allowing it to accumulate on one side due to the helix.
