    Hi everyone.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever installed artificial turf over a high traffic area around a green, tee, or bunker as an alternative to sodding that same spot over and over. If so, how does it impact or affect play? Thanks for your time.

I have never seen it used around greens but I did see several courses in the NY City area use artificial turf on several tees. The golf courses were golfer factories, their tees were very small, and heavily shaded . The tees never stood a chance. The course upper management obviously had no interest in dealing with the underlying cause. The artificial turf was beat 10 ways to Sunday, torn, curled, dirty, rippled, and just plain ugly.

What about using that mesh that the turf grows over. I've seen it in mags before. I can't remember the name of it.

The famed 17th green at TPC Sawgrass has an artificial walk up to the green.

Question do they get a drop from that? Or as looking at Kenneth's where could they drop?

Man made obstruction. Free drop no closer to the hole. No penalty. Or, if they choose, they can hit from it. It is pretty padded, so might be better to hit from than the 2" surrounding rough.

I'm going to do a test area at the base of a big fir tree. We can't maintain turf because of root competition and heavy traffic. The newer artificial turf is quite good and they produce various shades of green to match up with existing turf. It is not cheap.

I use mats like you see in kitchens and they work great a little topdressing and most people don't even know they are there.
