There's a morality involved in forcing one group of citizens to pay benefits to another group. Walter Williams tells the story of seeing an elderly woman huddled on a heating grate in the dead of winter:

She's hungry and in need of shelter and medical attention. To help the woman, I walk up to you using intimidation and threats and demand that you give me $200. Having taken your money, I then purchase food, shelter and medical assistance for the woman. Would I be guilty of a crime?

A moral person would answer in the affirmative. I've committed theft by taking the property of one person to give to another.

It doesn't matter even if 200 million people think it's ok. It's still stealing. Williams explained:

Don't get me wrong. I personally believe that assisting one's fellow man in need by reaching into one's own pockets is praiseworthy and laudable. Doing the same by reaching into another's pockets is despicable, dishonest and worthy of condemnation. Some people call governmental handouts charity, but charity and legalized theft are two entirely different things.

"Was Robin Hood a thief?" Interesting question. Well, if he did exist and as the legends say forcefully took from the rich and gave to the poor, was this bad? Albert I think Robin Hood is an example of what happens when the 99% ers have had enough. Little 'King' John was squeezing the country dry to pay for the never ending wars in France, Richard's 3rd Crusade, and generally to support a lifestyle widely different from the common folk. Who was truly stealing from who? Wasn't John forcefully taking from the poor to support his agenda?

Whether or not Robin Hood actually did exist, we do know that King John was so horrible a leader that it ultimately led to a rebellion, which directly led to the Magna Carta, which is an early foundation for both the constitution of the UK and our own.

Are you suggesting that modern day welfare programs equate to stealing fromt the rich to give to the poor as Robin hood did? The biggest lesson from the Robin Hood legends and what actually happened with the Magna Carta is that without support of the people there is no king. It's a two way street.

We do live in a society that holds free elections right? Where is the theft then?
