We are chasing an awfully frustrating problem on on of our diesel hybrid 322's. We are getting a steering fault "7310" when we travel on any downhill grade. If you hit a bounce on a downhill the fault immediately occurs, but it will also come up on most moderated down hill slopes too. We have had our best operators on it and we cannont navigate the course without 20+ faults so it's something we cannot work around. Machine mows and operates perfectly until you hit a decline. We can actually back the machine down hills safely and it will not fault out. It's obviously impractical to go backwards down all hills, so we need to find a solution. So far, we have cleaned and checked all main grounds, swapped the SCU from our other unit, swapped the steering motor from our other unit, swapped the steering wheel and yoke sensor from our other unit and the problem will not go away, and it does not follow any of the components to the other machine. Very odd.. The only items we have not changed are the wiring harness and the proxy switches on the rear wheel. Both proxy switches test good and the LED comes on as it should on them so we feel that all related components are good. We are noticing one odd issue in addition to the steering fault, but we are not sure if it's related. When driving, occasionally the headlight will come on dim and flicker, which tells us voltage is getting into the ground but we cannot for the life of us figure out how or where. This occurs when the machine is running o on flat ground too so we suspect it is not related. Machine was operating problem free until this spring. Please help, we have been chasing this issue all season and I am struggling with only one functional unit. Any input is much appreciated!

Just wondering if you have checked for play in the rear wheel spindle? If the bushings have a little play in them it could bounce the sensor out of range throwing out a fault. That would make sense for everything checking out in the shop. Please keep all of us that have the 322 eclipses informed since we will all probably fight issues like this in the future.

    Mark,

Very much appreciate the reply. I checked for any play in the steering but its tight and straight. Still stuck sadly.

I looked up the 7310 error code and in my 322 book it says "Speed sensor feedback error so I would start at the vehicle speed sensor and check for a good connection or just a bad speed sensor. That would make sense for it acting up going down a hill and the sensor sticks or looses connection.
The steering computer has to sense the engine is running and vehicle movement for the steering servo to operate. The way that a speed sensor works is a rotating part has a wheel with teeth that are located in a specific distance apart to form 360 degrees diameter circle. a switch with a magnet inside is located in close proximity to the wheel with teeth. As the wheel turns the magnet senses each tooth as they go by. The magnet is attached to a switch that opens and closes it as a magnetic tooth passes by telling the computer the vehicle movement and it's speed.
One more thing to remember on Jacobsen products they only give you enough wire to hook things up. I have had issues with connections being pulled loose creating a intermittent connection. Even if the connection looks good try pulling on them or wiggle them with the engine running to recreate the issue sometimes work but chances are you have a bad speed sensor.
