Can anybody tell me the formula for square footage of tees versus how many rounds are played each year?

    Thanks in advance,

i believe it is 100 sq. feet for every 1000 rounds as a rule of thumb, larger for par three tees.

I remember years ago (back in the late 90's?) I saw a formula in a USGA Greens Section Record, I think.

    Jeff,

I'm fairly certain the formula is in Hurdzan's Golf Course Architecture and Construction book. I'll see if I can dig up my copy tonight and look into it.

A quick search of TGIF came up with the attached article from Paul Vermuelen.

    I hope this helps.

Good article, my favorite quote from it is below!

"Superintendents who have difficulty maintaining turf are not working on courses with gargantuan tees. They are working on courses with teeny, tiny tees tucked back in the tall trees that golfers, for some perverted reason, think are a benchmark for great architecture."

We have a couple of tees that are 6-7M sq ft, and do 60k+ rounds per year (27 holes) they hold up pretty nicely, we also fill divots daily!!!
