What is everyone's opinion on a situation that might occur....you have a lackluster employee and you kept him all season due the lack of significant qualified labor in your area. Then during the season he has persuaded or caused another employee to somewhat mimic him.

You decided not to rehire the bad employee, so what do you do with the persuaded 2nd employee? Do you hire him and keep him on a short lease? Inform of him being on probation? Or just not rehire both? The second employee wasn't a problem until last season...

    Thoughts?

Personally I would have a chat with #2, if he was a productive employee prior to being polluted by #1. Inform #2 of his subpar performance. Detail the expectations and performance requirements. Then I would let #2 decide whether he can work under those conditions. If he accepts then he has a goal and hopefully he will perform. If he declines then he's gone on his own accord. At the very least he was given a chance.
