I wanted to get some opinions on rough mowers from those who have experience. I currently have a Lastec 721xr and a Progressive Proflex 120, both older models, for rough mowing. My problem is that I usually only have labor for one person to mow and need to decide which to use. Until this year I had volunteers mowing my rough and they preferred the Progressive because the course has owned it longer. Each one has its problems and I'm going to have a new employee on it this year. Any advice on which you like better, is easier to learn on, less breakdowns/issues, etc.

Personally I like the Lastec . We demo both at my previous course . Worked great for years . A lot less going on and easy to maintain . Occasionally a wing belt would go because the pto wasn't off before lifting the wings . Either one will mow a lot of area for long periods of time if maintained properly .

Just bought my 3rd Lastec 721XR in the past 18 years. These mowers have stood up for us. One is the primary rough mower and probably gets more use than any other machine we use. I considered changing this year toward a dedicated rough mower but it seemed like we would give up the great quality the Lastec provides.

I also like the Lastec but the problem I am having is the welds are breaking where the arms attach. My mechanic is an amazing welder but they just aren't holding like they should. Have you seen this on yours?

    Any comments about Land Pride?

We are debating the issue ourselves. Our dedicated JD 1600's have not held up as we would have hoped,

Our one course just replaced theirs with a Jacobsen R-311, one of our other courses will replace theirs in the 16-17 budget year, and we are scheduled to replace ours in 17-18 budget year.

There has been some discussion about getting 2 large z-mowers or maybe getting a pull behind unit. The course that already replaced theirs doesn't really have that option mostly due to terrain. Our other two courses are a little more wide open and except for trees can handle a pull behind unit better.

Of course we will try to do labor, fuel, and maintenance costs to the best of our ability.

    Thanks!

As mentioned before, research the Trimax Snake mower. We will more than likely be purchasing one next year.

Lastec here going into its 9th year. Few belts, dozen wheel bearings, and one weld. It is pretty much a rolling bucket of grease. Unit was purchased to have a second tractor. All pretty good but it tends to run up the hours on the tractor.🤔

Lastec all the way. The toro units are best used on mostly flat areas or will over flex the belts . Belt changing can be very time consuming. Lastec will contour to turf better and without overflexing the belts. Belt changing is quick and easy.

Used lastec 16 years and toro 12 years at same course

As posted twice, please look at TriMax roller mowers. They will change the way you look at rough mowing.
