Our club is in the beginning stages of a clubhouse expansion project. I've been asked to give input on how close to the 18th green is "too close" for the proposed new section of building. Any input would be helpful.

    Merry Christmas!

It would be too close if a poorly struck bunker shot might end up breaking a window.

If a thrown putter can end up on the patio deck, then that is too close.

We'll have to make sure everyone has plenty of stickum on their putter grips...

The clubhouse at Pinehurst #2 is about 50 yards behind the green. I have seen a ball land on the patio.

I hit a thin wedge out of a bunker from 63 yards out at Pinehurst #2 and made Chris Key and others run for cover from that patio behind 18. Still made bogey.

Ok, being serious, besides the possibility of someone getting hurt which could happen anywhere.

My biggest concern would be possible shade issues, how tall will it be? Is it blocking any morning sun, winter sun, whatever is your biggest concern. Also air movement. Those questions might help you answer how close you might want it to be.

How about instead of how close we look at how permanent.

We had a similar issue several years ago, and I do not remember if was a code for our municipality, but the requirement was 150 feet from center of the green to any structure.

Great topic. I've been working on something similar. Trying to attach a document. Used Google Earth to get a couple of pics. The patio behind 18 on #2 is 63 feet from the back edge of the green. I grew up in Pinehurst. That new clubhouse addition opened in 1975. Donald Ross had nothing to do with it.

The worst situation I ever saw in our area was old 18 gold at Congressional. I actually found a historical image from 1988 on Google Earth. It was a long par 3 and the green was only 50 feet from the proshop. Several people were struck by balls and the green had to be moved. See attached, 2 pages.

You really should consult a golf course architect. Then you share liability.

I tell you another good topic would be 1st tees near the clubhouse. That is really cool. At Merion people are eating lunch right beside the tee. Kenneth Ingram, UMD
