We are going to do a fishing rodeo on the golf course in a couple of weeks. This is our first time doing this and have some basic plans. This is geared towards kids and trying to do something different. We have age groups and categories for biggest, most and smallest fish. I am thinking of doing a casting contest as well. Every kid will win a prize(tackle, hat, baits). Has anyone else done something like this on the course and can give us some do's and dont's/ideas?

Dollar for first fish is always popular on the headboats here on the bay. Always surprized. The anchor hasn't hit bottom yet and someone is reeling one up. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

Two years ago, one of our guys decided (on his own) to put a double app of Cutrine in our lake to make the water "extra clean" - two days before our annual fishing derby. The only thing the kids needed was a net. Oops

I would think a life jacket is in order or at least a few life guards, even if it is on the bank. Safety first you know. Maybe require a parent be present.

Yes most if not all the kids will have a parent with them the whole time. I am not expecting a huge turn out maybe ten kids total. Hopefully more! We did treat our ponds this week with some granular copper sulfate and reminded the guys putting it out what can happen if you go heavy!

I always buy a couple bags of floating fish food and start feeding the bream in a certain area near the pump house (where I can store the food) at the time of day the rodeo is going to be. It takes them a couple days to figure it out, but soon it will look like piranha going after it. Cut the food off two days before the rodeo and put the small kids in that area with a cane pole and crickets. They will catch bream until their tired of catching them. This also opens up the rest of the pond for the more serious bass fishing. To me, a well stocked and managed pond can be a huge asset to a golf course. Check out Mississippi States Wildlife Biology page for pond management tips. One of the main things is that almost everything that is caught in a pond needs to be kept out. I usually collect them if the members don't want them and give them to my staff to take home. If the pond gets over run with bass and crappie you will notice that all your bass are almost the same size with not many big bass, there just isn't enough food to go around. I also build and structure or "fish condos" out of old pallets and sink them in areas that can be reached from the bank. Tie a coke bottle/tennis ball/racket ball on a string to float to the top to make the location of the structures. It always seems to me that fisherman think that every golf course pond is full of ten pound fish. It can be with the correct management.

Rodeo went great, we had 26 kids participate in the event. We had a few of our golfers that did not agree with having the event on the course. All the parents loved it and the kids had fun. We did burgers and hot dogs afterwords and gave out some great prizes. I can see this being a annual event.
