When Monsanto lost their patent on Round Up and generics were about to hit the scene, Monsanto released several lower priced generics of their own and thus retained market share.

Why is it that the Syngentas, Bayers and Basfs of the world don't either release a lower priced generic, or even better just drop the price of the name brands to the equivalent of a generic. They have had the benefit, while covered by patents to recoup their research and development costs, so to me the smart move would be to match the generics and continue generating sales to develop new chemistry.

Many of us are in a catch 22 as we know that the generics are cheaper, but by the same token we need to support the developers in order to see new products brought to the market

It may be that this is happening Stateside...I don't know but I do know when it comes to pharmaceuticals I am always hearing advertizing up here saying that Viagara now costs the same as the generic version so why not stick with what you know gets you up. Similar advertizing and marketing is also happening with other off patents drugs.

Am I missing something? or should I go into marketing?

Money, greed, power and undying need for market share. That about sums up the chemical business. My favorite part is when Syngenta sells its patent for Banner to a generic company(or company's) and the product is produced on the same assembly line yet the prices differ?? Go figure.

Red I like your marketing savvy.

I have seen significant decrease in price from Bayer with Ronstar, TopChoice and Chipco Choice. They are still higher then the generics, but at least it's easier to swallow sticking with the name brand. I have also seen significant drop in price from Syngenta on Barricade compared to generics. I have seen Round-up drop in price compared to generics as well.

I use Syngenta's generic fungicides as much as possible. Docket WS is the generic for Daconil Weather Stix and is priced much lower. It is the exact same product. I use Chipco 26019 instead of Chipco 26 gt and it is the same active ingredient and priced less. Monsanto's generic round up is Ranger Pro, a good product for costing around $50 for 2.5 gallons.

As I understand it, Resolute is a generic Barricade made by Syngenta and put out by them at a great price, the only thing is we don't get the generic Drive if we have break through.

We've used Monsanto's Ranger Pro, has worked well for us.

Very good question Larry. I have thought the same many times especially with pharmaceuticals!! It just makes "cents"!

Quali-Pro does support research as I was told at this years GIS by the seminar instructors from Virginia Tech.

I would imagine all generics support "Trials Research" to some extent if only to prove their their product is equivalent to the name brand. I'm more talking about basic research into new chemistries. They may be doing that. I don't know.
Joe Duich once said to me at the news of The Guelph Turfgrass Institute opening up their new turf plots...."It's disappointing! What we need someone willing to do basic research....The last thing we need is another turf plot"
