I have ran several adds the past couple of years for assistants. We have got very little response to these adds. I am curious if anyone else has noticed this and if there is something that I could do better to get the resumes coming in. Thanks in advance.

No luck here in the Seattle area. 36k with no benefits doesn't interest many people. Offered my position to 2 different people and they have both turned it down. Our chapter job board is full of jobs with little applicants. Tough industry right now for public and municipal courses trying to pay as little as possible.

I had a tough time with 40k and benefits in AZ. Each time less than 10 resumes. With the Superintendent compensations falling out of the sky, not a huge interest with the tech generation. I see more crew members just filling in as assistants.

After 2 months of searching with no luck of anyone accepting my position I am going the way of what Don just said. Hiring 2 people for the wage of my assistant and training them well enough to do the job of a Spray Tech and Irrigation Tech. More work for me at the end of the day but i guess that's what these jobs have come to.

I don't see any changes coming anytime soon in salaries for assistants at least in my area for privately owned public and municipal courses. If anyone has any suggestions or advice for finding good assistants for cheap is love to hear them.

To be fair, the hours and dedication expected from Assistants demand for the pay to be much better than the adds that I see. No longer are Assistants and graduates going to "X Top 100 Club," working for a smaller pay check and more hours. That doesn't pay the bills. A slightly bigger pay check and benefits and a somewhat normal golf course work week will get you a larger resume pool. Factor in the possibility that the employee has a wife or family-time and money win the day.
That being said, I think $40k is a baseline if you expect to have a handful of applicants applying for an Assistant job. That's still only $19/hr if they work 40 hours, and we know that's never the case. At 50hrs/week, that $15/hr. That irrigation/spray tech type money.

40 K? Hell that's superintendent pay for most courses in our area.
