To anybody who uses a 3-point hitch backhoe, what are the best ones out there? And what are the things to look out for when buying one?

About 20 years ago at my previous position I purchased a Kelly. We had several different size buckets and it worked great. Fairly easy to attach and remove.

We have had both kelly and ford 3pt hoes. I would opt for a used mini excavator instead. Much more versatile and useful in my opinion.

Here at QCC we had a Kelly and had no trouble at all. We put it on our Ford 340B and it worked great.

If you can do all your digging at one time rent a mini excavator instead of owning your own 3 pt. Way more productive.

3 point backhoe on a tractor with turf tires is a must for me. It is great for irrigation and drainage lines. I hate bringing our mini x onto the course. The mini x walks very slow, so we trailer it on the streets as close as we can get then unload it and walk the machine on the cartpath. Then have to set plywood down everywhere the mini x goes on the grass. Those tracks are very destructive. I know they make turf tracks, which I have never tried, but still seems they would cause damage.
I can drive out to where I need to be with the 3 point, dig the hole or trench, then drive back by the time it takes me to load up and move the mini x to the excavation site.
The only downsides to the 3 point back hoe are you cant move the tractor while your on the backhoe, so you will need to get off and on constantly while trenching. Most 3 point backhoes have a much shorter boom, or less of a reach.
I love our mini excavator, but I love our 20+ year old "Woods" 3 point backhoe even more.
I am sure they have all different sized backhoe attachments, but ours runs fine with a 40 hp tractor.

I'd buy or rent a mini x as needed but things to look for when buying a used 3pt are pitting rust on the cylinders and any sort of "patchy" welds probably hidden by off color paint.
