Great Visits in South Dakota and Kansas; Plus, Fall is Looming!

Sep 4, 2019, 11:08 by Steve Randall
This past August, GCSA of South Dakota Secretary/Treasurer Rick Wit of Rapid City organized a great meeting with members in the area. I also paid a visit to facilities, members and non-members in Western Kansas.

With August in the rearview mirror, it's time to reflect on connections made, and those upcoming.

South Dakota GCSA Members

Many thanks to GCSA of South Dakota Secretary/Treasurer Rick Wit of Rapid City.  He organized a great meeting with members in the area. It was a chance to discuss GCSAA initiatives and how GCSAA can work with members across the state.

In addition to meeting at the Golf Club at Red Rock, I paid a visit to active member and Grassroots Ambassador Greg Brandriet near Spearfish, S.D. at Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club.

Greg has been working on sustainability at his course. Solar panels power the back 9 pump house. A garden provides fresh produce for the restaurant. Greg is looking for ways to showcase golf as a beneficial asset. He continues to engage with state and local officials in the area.

Last month, I also paid a visit to facilities, members and non-members in Western Kansas. I met with great people. Kevin Shook, a Class A member in Elkhart, Kan., maintains a great 9-hole facility, but more importantly, he's active in the community. He serves as the high school golf coach, a baseball, basketball, and football official, and stays active in county and city affairs.

Geoff Schiffelbein Cimarron Valley Golf Course Santanta Kansas

I also met Geoff Schiffelbein at Cimarron Valley Golf Course in Satanta, Kan., which is 45 minutes south and east of Garden City. Another tremendous 9-hole facility! Geoff is not only a GCSAA member, he's also a PGA member, and he does it all. Whether it's his work on the golf course, pro shop, or clubhouse, he has the course in top condition.

There were several other memorable visits and moments that showed that our members across the country, whether the facility be large or small, are doing great things!

As we start September, it's time to switch gears. Education season is nearing its start.  Many chapters will be hosting fall meetings and outings. If you have not been active with your chapter in years past, now is the time!  Sharpen the saw and get ready to have a great fall.

Consider GCSAA a great resource of information as well. We are here for you!

Looking ahead
