100 YEARS OF PROGRESS: CELEBRATING THE GCSAA CENTENNIAL

Sep 30, 2025

As GCSAA gets ready to celebrate its 100th anniversary, it’s the perfect time to look back at how far the golf course management industry has come, and how much of that progress is thanks to superintendents coming together, sharing knowledge and raising the bar for the profession.

In 1926, when the GCSAA was founded, “greenkeeping” looked a lot different. Fast forward a century, and today’s golf course superintendent is a highly skilled professional, trained in everything from turfgrass science and soil health to water management, technology, budgeting, environmental sustainability and leadership.

That transformation didn’t happen by accident. It happened because superintendents invested in each other. Through chapters, education programs, conferences and certification, superintendents built a community that prioritized learning, professionalism and innovation. They took what was once seen as a behind-the-scenes role and turned it into a respected, science-based profession that plays a critical role in the success of golf facilities.

What’s especially impressive is how the industry has shifted toward environmental responsibility. Superintendents have led the charge in reducing inputs, conserving water, protecting wildlife habitats and adopting sustainable practices. That kind of leadership doesn’t just benefit the game, it benefits the surrounding communities and the planet.

As we celebrate 100 years of GCSAA, we’re really celebrating the people behind the scenes. We’re celebrating the superintendents who’ve pushed the industry forward with dedication, curiosity and collaboration. The future of golf is in good hands, because it’s being shaped by professionals who care deeply about their courses, their communities, and the game itself.

Here’s to the next 100.
